I'll definitely do that. I have some planning to do first. I'll make sure to take my DSLR along and snap some pro-style photos.

Which brings up a good point. I need some other suggestions. I'm going to start around the Monument area and probably hit some nearby places. If time permits I'll probably take in the scenery. Can anyone suggest the best places to go for scenic photography? Not just nature, but also bluffs, cityscapes, etc.?

Here goes my list>
Palmer Lake - Cute little town about 5 miles nw of Monument.
Manitou Springs - Eclectic town on the west side of COS.
Garden of the Gods - Amazing rock formations. Also west side of COS
Seven Falls - Beautiful area with a great waterfall.
Cheyenne Zoo - If you have time.
Pikes Peak - Amazing drive or train ride to 14k'.
Downtown COS - Make sure you see the older neighborhoods around Colorado College, just north of downtown.
US Air Force Academy - They've got a great gift shop and visitor center. The Chapel is a national landmark.
Olympic Training Center - Free tours and a great gift shop.

I'm sure others will chime in with more suggestions

Include suburbs as well please...as strange as that sounds. Newer developments - some have talked about "Californication" of Colorado...so I assume you're referring to stuff like...
File:Suburbia by David Shankbone.jpg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I'd like to snap some pics of that too, so I can do some real-life comparisons and see if what people are saying is really true - that some areas are getting as bad as what Southern California is offering...

Seriously, before you get too serious about Monument, research the gas drill plans west of the highway.

I'm a big fan of Palmer Lake and Larkspur.

Great to see folks mentioning Palmer Lake on here. We tend to get overlooked because we're so small and off the beaten path. All of our ten* restaurants, with the possible exception of The Depot, are quite good and fun in their own unique way, and the many hiking and biking trails around here are top-notch and easy to access. Most of us (townsfolk) enjoy having many visitors year round, so come on up, go for a hike, and have a good meal when you can (most places are closed on Monday though).

*Our restaurants:
Amuze Bistro
The Depot
Paravincini's
B & E Filling Station
Bella Panini
Omalley's Pub
The Speedtrap Cafe
Rock House Ice Cream
MoZaic
Pinz

We also have a bakery, a country store, a wine seller a history museum, an arts center, souvenir shops, copious hiking, biking, and other outdoor activities and more...

Man, the city should pay me for this, or at least give me a discount on my water bill next month!
