Pueblo Info
What are some good areas to look into around the Pueblo area. I may be transferring to Pueblo and have read some good and bad. I am currently from Mobile, AL, so I understand that you have good areas and bad areas all within the same county. I have 4 children (ages 12-3), so I would like a kid friendly area. Also, is there much work for a Diesel Mechanic with experience around the Pueblo area. We will be renting and our rent should be around 1k a month (plus or minus) so I am sure that will need to be factored into searching for neighborhoods. I want an area that has the BEST school area, that is very important to me. I would also like a tight community or neighborhood for us to be a part of. I have read several threads posted on the same subject, but the dates on them are older so I would like some new information. Thanks everyone for any help you can give me.

The rent in Pueblo is not very expensive at all so that should not be a issue. Have you seen this thread, if not I suggest you take some time and look through it:
http://www.city-data.com/forum/colorado/523455-pueblo-southern-colorado.html#post6736580
As far as neighborhoods to live in I would suggest staying out of the east side, south of Colorado 47 and the Bessemer area. Other then that the other areas are nice. I live on the south side by the golf course and love it, my mom live in Pueblo West and loves it there. The north side is the new and a great place as well as by the University.

I did read your other thread, thank you so much for your help. I know this all sounds redundant to some, but when a person is getting ready to move their family 6 states away, to a place that is as foreign as a different country, there is never too much information. Again, thank you so much for your time in answering me. Sometimes when I ready about areas it is so confusing b/c I have no concept of what the city/town/state is like.

Colorado City/Rye (look at pics), maybe even Beulah area for best, then it's a toss-up between Pueblo West and the Mesa (area around the Lanes or out past County High School) for #2.
The problem with the Mesa is that I have no idea how the grade schools and middle schools are these days. I've heard good things (and some bad) about Pueblo West, but I live there and it's new, clean, growing...
We all understand the importance of you providing for and protecting your children. We want the best for you and yours. But you simply can't put this decision on us. You have to make the decision for yourself.
This is the problem I have with the relocation part of these forums. I'm not so good at it. I have a hard time knowing what you really want and need and everything you will consider to be a deal-killer. One thing I can tell you about Pueblo is that the County is very big, so all these areas are within Pueblo County. Someone from Colorado Springs or Denver would assume that there's no good parts in Pueblo. Some of us know that to be wrong and this is why Joss and I (and Pro) and glad to come in here and set the record straight... about the fact there is some awesome gems scattered about.
Granted, you described your post well. I just want to say, be careful with Pueblo. I hear and would I guess agree that anything east of Fountain Creek is rough until you get up into maybe parts of Belmont and north of Hwy 47 (aka North 50), but once you get further out into the Mesa, there's some nice homes and neighborhoods out there. Pueblo West is Pueblo West and same for Colorado City and Rye.
I ask you to do an advanced search on these places within the Colorado Subforum and get a feel for these places and Pueblo. Maybe the Aberdeen and North-Ridge (Eagleridge) area of Pueblo is great. I'd say parts of the South West area of Pueblo is great, especially near El Camino. As Joss says, the area east of Pueblo Blvd between St Claire and Rutgers/Red Creek Springs has some gem neighborhoods. A friend of mine lives on Amhurst.
I just did the advanced search and I'm underwhelmed. But keep after it. You'll still have to do some sorting because Joss and I are the only ones who live in this area. Oh, and ProLeadership.
As far as rent. $1000.00/month may limit you. My cousin in P-Dub rents her pretty nice 3br near Purcell and Watermelon for about 1250.00/month. But she and her husband lived in it for a few years and fixed it up really nice!
Good luck!

Pueblo's unemployment rate is one of the highest in the state right now. There is a community college that looks for Diesel mech teachers from time to time in Fort Morgan. You might want to check them out.

Pueblo, also, has some of the states biggest construction projects going on right now so when the economy turns around Pueblo will be one of the brightest spots in the state.

Denver - 6.3%
CoSprings - 6.9%
Pueblo - 7.4%
Yuma Arizona - 15.4%
But the OP said they are "transferring" to Pueblo...maybe. So what's the point about the unemployment stats? If they come to Pueblo and bring a job with them, then that will lower Pueblo unemployment towards Denver and Colorado Springs.
So come on out OP. Bring your job with you! As far as the Diesel Mechanic with experience, I couldn't tell you. I wish I could tell you more about that. But you better hurry up and transfer out here before someone from Yumma Arizona or someone from El Centro California (22% unemployment rate) does.

Not sure just where diesel work is most prevalent in CO, but I'd put my money on cities / towns along the I-70 corridor. I know there are major semi dealers in the Denver area, where you get a confluence of I-70 / I-76 / I-25 plus a metro area of 2.5M people. Limon, CO, way out east of Denver, is a truck node where Hwy 24 diverges from I-70 and heads over to COLO SPGS, Pueblo and southern Colorado. Denver also has a large bus fleet that may need diesel mechanics.
Don't overlook Cheyenne, WY either, where I-80 and I-25 converge on that major east-west junction point. Great town.
Look in Craigslist.
- In the Denver job listings there are 6 diesel mechanic jobs listed under "transport" and several more under "Skilled Trades."
- In COLO SPGS (a 40 minute drive from Pueblo) there is one listing of note: Diesel Mechanic Technician
- In Pueblo, there is one listing for the dominant trash hauling company.
Oddly, in the Pueblo listing I found this ad for Cat/Cummins heavy equipment mechanics in the mining industry in Gillette, WY, way up in the northern part of the state. That's the major coal mining area in WY where millions of tons of coal are mined each year; those jobs should be solid for a very long time, but that is rugged country and bitter cold in winter. Although a LONG way from Pueblo, if you're going to move across the country, you may want to look at other possibilities. Heavy Equipment Mechanic- Mining in Wyoming
Good luck to you no matter where you end up.

Thanks for all your help. I am flying out to Pueblo next week for my next round of interviews, well acutally to COS and then driving into Pueblo. I look forward to it. My husband and I have decided to rent an apartment at first. He will not have a job and the apartments offer short term leases which will give us time for him to find a job. We are not sure if he will find work in Pueblo or COS so we do not want to get into a year's lease and him end up driving an hour to work one way. Does anyone have any info on the best apartments (I know best is in the eye of the beholder). I would like to check them out while I am out there next week. The apartments will have to have at least three bedrooms.
Again, thanks for any and all help.
