Default Grand Junction and Horses

I am considering taking a job in Grand Junction and am trying to gather as much information as possible. I've read several of the posts regarding Grand Junction but still have a few questions. 1. I understand that renting houses in the area is somewhat difficult, especially if you have pets (which I do) - what should I realistically be expecting to pay or should I consider buying a home instead? 2. I understand that some areas are a bit more risky to live in than others but I haven't been able to find which areas these are specifically. 3. I will eventually be moving my horse to the area and was wondering if anyone has suggestions on areas to board him.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

1. The rental market should be loosening up, my wife and I paid $500 for a decent 1BR/1BA 2 years ago. You should expect to pay at least that, and probably more. House will be $1K+ I'm sure.

2. The only real areas I'd avoid is Clifton, Fruitvale, and to some extent, Orchard Mesa. There are shady pockets of crud within these areas, and there are also some livable areas, but for the most part, people try to avoid them.

3. I'd check the Nickelads, GJfreepress, and Grand Junction Sentinel classifieds for boarding options. I have land bordering BLM; if you're interested, IM me.
