Default Jobs in Steamboat Springs

What are the jobs like in Steamboat Springs?

There are 2 categories of jobs for me. Oudoor/rec work and science.

1.
I am a NOLS grad (alaska backpacking) and have been through raft guide training on the New River Gorge in WV (though I couldn't complete my certification on the river because I killed my car that summer) and was a ski instructor for beginners at Winterplace Ski Resort in WV. I am not PSIA certified and could not teach anything but beginners, especially on real mountains. I am a decent skier, but need much improvement. I had WFR certification through WMA, but couldn't recertify due to lack of funds. I still want to, though. I also have tons of equine experience and have a lot of my own gear. I also completed Ohio State Universities Program of Outdoor Pursuits when I was in undergrad. I'm not an expert in any area, but I do have some experience.

2.
I currently work as a lab animal tech in biomedical research, but my heart in conservation biology. I want to go to grad school for it. Are there any conservation jobs in SS? I have a BS in Animal Science. I really enjoyed mist netting/bird banding in undergrad. I have a small amount of experience with fiiltering water samples, testing pH, data entry, etc. Currently I'm volunteering in a lab that studies vit A metabolism to get some more lab expereince. I am an AALAS certififed ALAT.

Also I am an amateur photographer and have a lot of food service experience, but I'd rather not do that again. Last resort only. :-) (the food service, not the photography).

Thanks in advance for any responses.

Try contacting Kent at Blue Sky West / Steamboat Powdercats. They run cat operations in the winter, and rafting trips in the summer. They might be looking for a photographer who can ski & has rafting experience. Your WFR cert might matter to them as well.

Good luck- the Routt county government just laid off 30 people & I imagine they are all on the hunt in an already limited job market (the problem with every ski town).

One other option, if you're inclined - the Second Nature program in Utah (wilderness therapy program) might be interested in field staff with biology & NOLS background. You could live in Steamboat and commute to the field (near Vernal, UT). It's like a 4-days-on, 3-days-off kind of job - so you'd drive from the Boat on a Monday and come home on a Thursday.

I want to do this, but I'm still debating the wisdom of ditching my stable and decently paying but completely hateful job. :-)

I know what I want to do and maybe I'll do it.....

Thanks so much for the info! If I do head that way, it's good to have at least an idea of someone to contact.

Unfortunately, my WFR has expired and I can't get it renewed on my current salary (it's not *that* decent of a job...)

Try checking with the BLM I believe they have a position open in Craig and that's close enough to Steamboat that you can still ski every weekend

I've been applying pretty heavily for gov't jobs via USA Jobs for the past month or so. The BLM is one of the agencies I am looking at. Is there another way to apply that you are aware of or is USA Jobs (USAJOBS - The Federal Government's Official Jobs Site) it?

It's all I know of at the moment.
