Birds of a feather stick together!
Depends on what social events you are going to such as birthday parties and the like and what "type" of people will be attending.
Wear whats comfortable and then determine wher you will be and who you will be with.
My friends and I hold parties and we always DRESS up! and our guests do as well - who are from all social classes.
Going out shopping and what not... a NICE pair of jeans and a nice shirt - which is generally considered casual .

When I think high culture and classy dress, I always think "Buffalo"

I thought parkas and those hats with the ear flaps were what they wore in Buffalo.

I actually liked Boulder, it reminded me of NYC with the broad cross section of people. You hope to encounter interesting people in your life travels. People who don't care how they look, and make no effort to look good are less interesting.
