One again I support Jazzlover's position, but he's helping us see the Big Picture. Ralita, the OP, wants to narrow down choices and has an eye on South Fork. Fortunately, South Fork does not experience the bitter cold as the 'downstream' communities of the San Luis Valley. It is a great location, but the town itself is a bit too small to enjoy a sense of ''community'.
Towns like Center, Saguache, Monte Vista, even Crestone have more going on. My Texas relatives stay in South Fork because it has that 'cabin in the woods' feel, but another attribute of towns in that area, is there are plenty of Texans nearby to make them feel at home.
You need to spend some time in the area, and visit nearby towns. Buy a cup of coffee for a few locals, or just ask your waittress, and see what brought them to town.
