Read this thread, and maybe you'll "get it."

Another question I have is do you think you might come back in the winter at all? Do you have friends or family that might want to ski here? That would change where you might want to look for a cabin.

Yea we dont rent. We are real estate investors from the SW and just looking over all the bank owned properties in states like Montana, Colorado etc.
The thing I guess people dont get is, renting is a fools game. When you're young and have money you should spend it wisely. Life is like chess friends.
If you have 300k in the bank for example, why in the world would you want your money sitting there getting 1-2% when you can take $50k of it and invest in real estate that was previously valued at 100k. Instant equity and land has and always will be a nice bank account in no need of FDIC insurance.
I can understand the urban sprawl argument but would you rather have a chill concervative couple buying up 40 acres behind you and use it 5 months a year or Wal Mart buy it?
Resistance is futile.

Hmmmmmm. You remind me of someone on this site a few months back.
I'd say buy a nice cabin on acreage that already exists.
Anywhere would be good!
Obviously resistance is futile.....all you have to do is never come back here for opinions, buy your land and build your cabin. No one CAN prevent ANYTHING....this is a forum, we don't know you.

People from Colorado on the internet seem to be as accepting as their reputation OFF the net would suggest.
LOL

Dizzydog...
I'm a relative newcomer to Colorado. I've been here for just under 3 years. NEVER, NOT ONCE during my time in this wonderful state have I ever encountered ANY anti-newcomer sentiment in person. Everyone I've met has been friendly, & welcoming. The only place I've ever been exposed to any negativity is here on the Colorado forum ( usually after I provoked it! ). So just let it roll off your back. Let everyone have their say...but don't take any of it seriously..even the stuff you like hearing.
In regard to the scourge issue....you can find everything you are looking for without consuming additional resources to build another cabin. I hope you come to Colorado. I think you can find what you're looking for with a little bit of in-person exploration. As I suggested earlier, check out the Grand Mesa. Best wishes!

If you are looking for a investment on the top of my head I want to suggest Summit county but I could be wrong...

I think Jazzlover was driving at the rural sprawl argument not the urban sprawl. Personally, I'd rather have no one buy it and the land remain somewhat wild. But I certainly understand your desire to spend summer here.
If you're in AZ, I'd say stay in Durango/southwestern area of Colorado. To me, its the prettiest part of the state and has such a great feel. Its also too far for us idiots on the front range to come down for the weekend - so you'll miss a lot of that craziness. Plus, its a days drive for you if you have some emergency at home.
I think you could build a place while limiting your impact - doesn't sound like you'll go for a yurt, but a carefully planned small cabin could do the job.

DizzyDog, you asked a question, and we gave you our honest opinions. What more did you expect? Most of us who live here now are accepting of newcomers (I am a newcomer myself) but we would prefer to see you purchase an existing structure as opposed to building a new play-home on otherwise natural land.

Bottom line is I would love to find something existing. I did just ask in the original post what areas. Perhaps I should have said BUILD/BUY a cabin. I did not realize how sensitive you guys were.
Ill try and change that.
