LOL, my wife & I are headed to Durango next weekend for the annual Home & Ranch Show. Can't wait. Going to get a chance to meet some of the builders I've been communicating with via email for several months, see some examples of their work, check out some of the other trades that exhibit and get an idea of what's happening' on the Durango home building scene.

We plan to build a timber frame home and this will be a good opportunity to see a number of homes. Should be a good (albeit short - fri thru mon) trip.

I live in Durango currently and it is very expensive to live here. Finding a place who takes pets can be difficult. My sister just recently found a place that took pets and they are paying 1100.00. You.cAn find cheaper places but you are going to get just what you pay for . Dgo is a tourist/college town. Best time to find rentals are after the college is out for the summer. There is a saying in Dgo. " hOw do you leave Dgo with a million dollars? Come with 2 million!! Yes it's beautiful here lots to do but expect to have several jobs, but wealthy already I just don't care where you live or what it looks like. I wish you the best of luck! As for me, I'm ready to move this summer. Cost of living is just too much. I'm a single mom, have a good paying job for Dgo and just bought a house but at the end of the day all I can afford to do is work and home. No life for me anymore. There's gotta be more to life then this.
FYI several people commute from hatfield, Ignacio and even farmington nm to go to jobs in Dgo because they can't afford to live in Dgo

You're to be commended for your ability to that there in this economy. Are you sure you'll be able to find a much different situation elsewhere?

I keep telling myself this too. Hang in there, the only constant in life is change. It will change.

I agree with this. I honestly don't know a single mom out there right now who isn't just getting by. It's what it is. If you love Durango, other than the cost of living right now, I'd try to stick it out.

In all fairness, your experience is not unique to DRO, it's actually very common in many towns & cities in the US today. It's all relative. I live in SW PA and spending $1,000/ mo on a house rental is absolutely reasonable. I'm looking at rentals in DRO and have found many places that accept pets. My rent target is $1000-$1500/ mo and at that price range, I've found many houses & condos available. The house next to my current residence is up for rent at the moment.... for $2,500/ mo.

That saying about Durango, it may be funny but it needs to be taken in context. It applies to people who didn't do their homework and thought they were moving to the promised land. Many people over extended themselves the last decade (with the real estate bubble) and then paid the price for it in the end.... nothing more. So many people thought that the bubble would never end that by investing more than they could afford in houses & real estate, they would reap incredible riches. Those people found out the hard way and did indeed lose lots & lots of money, even their primary homes in many cases. But that was nobody's fault but theirs. It certainly does not apply to everyone because anyone who does their homework & invests their money prudently will do just fine in DRO or anywhere else for that matter. It's nothing more than knowing what you're getting yourself into... up front. I haven't seen anything that indicates a higher cost of living to me in DRO than I currently experience (besides slightly more expensive housing). Everything else is very much in line with where I currently live & taxes are considerably lower. If you want to feel a pinch, try spending $10K+ a year just on property taxes which only ever move one way... up, year after year, like I did for many years. It hurts when your property taxes add $800-$1000/ mo to your principal & interest.

And no, you cannot move to DRO and expect to get a "career" type job (or any job for that matter). Anybody who doesn't understand this and thinks that they can just move there, get a job, and live happily ever after is delusional. Again, anybody who does their homework and wants to do that would quickly rule out DRO as the place to move to. Simple as that.

As I said..... everything is relative when discussing cost of living, it should be qualified as the cost of living for them. It may not universally apply to everyone.

This is a VERY accurate description of Durango. I've given my opinion about Durango on this site many times but the best way for me to sum it up is by saying that Durango is a great place to visit, but not a great place to live.

True for SOME people but not for everyone. I imagine there are many Durango residents who think that Durango is a great place to live. I'd love to live there myself!

To each his own. Perhaps somebody who has lived in more expensive locales (of which there are many in this great country) may not think that DRO is so expensive. When I move there, I'll actually see a reduction in my expenses.

So I would ask, what specifically is so expensive in DRO that nobody can afford to live there? I know that housing is marginally more expensive but nothing else I've seen there seems to be. I've seen plenty of generalizations and of course the constant $2M joke but nobody has ever been able to specifically detail what makes DRO so expensive. Truthfully, I've spent lots of time there. I've grocery shopped many times, bought gas, paid rent. So what is it?

I think it's mostly just sour grapes, and a pessimistic, life's-a-bi*ch attitude that some posters rely upon to navigate thru their daily lives.
