Default Trinidads' Historic District Lodging

We're going to spend a few days in Trinidad this year (late september) before going to our annual Chama, NM stay. Never been to Trinidad and was wondering if you know if you can lodge in the Historic District. Read about a few B & Bs but they say walk to walmart. Not exactly what I consider a highlight of a trip I will take the Raton Pass so that's got to be pretty along with Route 12 for a day but am hoping that their Historic District is real nice. Like say Eureka Springs, Galena....anyone out there from the area? Or knows the area?

If they say you can walk to Wal-Mart they are not in the historic
district. The historic district is pretty much the downtown area,
Main Street, and then Commercial Street. There are some very
old motels that are no longer used for motels in this district, but
I don't think there is any lodging available in the downtown area.
The downtown area (historic district) is pretty much made up
of shops and bars.

Highway 12 and Raton Pass are beautiful drives, especially in the fall.
Restaurant suggestions for Trinidad would be for good steaks -
BlackJack's Saloon on Main Street, for hamburgers and such -
Lee's Bar-be-cue (it's way off the beaten path, ask for directions,
it is worth it!) and for mexican food - Tequila's on the south
side.

I used to live in Trinidad and owned a business there. It has
a lot of history behind it and Bat Masterson used to be the
sheriff there. After I left Trinidad I moved to Raton, NM where
I lived for 14 years. Let me know if I can help in any way with
your trip!

That is what I was thinking too! Thank you. I think I'll try to find a nice hotel and just scout out the area. We always pick a different city each year to play around in before going to Chama, NM.

I am very excited about it's history. Last year we visited the enchanted circle area (Taos, Red River, Cimmaron) love it. I've been reading for years mostly diaries or anything I can find on the Santa Fe Trail. I find that very interesting. Trinidad kept popping up in the stories.

Thank you,

In Trinidad go to the Ava Maria shrine, visit Commercial
Street (paved with bricks, very neat). Ludlow is a neat
place to visit and within driving distance, read up on
the Ludlow massacre. I'll try to think of more things.

I was reading last night. I bought the Memoirs of Marian Russell along the Santa Fe Trail. They settled in Stonewall. The book was filled with fasinating history. I was going to read about the Maxwell Land Grant problems. In Chama where we go each year they still have land grant problems.
They post office lady in our area just took retirement in Raton, NM. That is why I thought of driving up through that area.
