Retirement west of Denver
Are there any posters that retired west of Denver or have family members that have? We are starting to look at future retirement areas.
We are seeking horse property that is within 1/2 hour from hospitals and colleges, near hiking and has active community groups for rock hunting, archaeology, gardening, horse riding and golf. Elevation under 7500' and pretty with trees. Decent affordability (not Boulder!). Want an area with some unique character - interesting history would be a bonus.
We have lived with snow for a couple job moves but I am wondering how the foothills are for older folks? And if 1/2 hour from a hospital is still too far (45 minutes is becoming so for my 80 year old in-laws, outside of Tucson). There aren't many smaller communities with decent, affordable public transportation here in the States.
Any ideas would be appreciated - and we are flexible. It's just nice that Denver has a major airport for travel and for family to come visit.

I've had some of the same thoughts for my future retirement and must say, as far as I can see, what you hope for doesn't exist. If you were really wealthy, of course, you could make it happen, but otherwise it sure doesn't exist in Colorado. Let us know if you find another place that works!

Too get all you want in that package I would say is not going to happen, especially without a large budget.
The foothill communities are fairly disjointed due to the topography and I think to get all the amenities you'll have to willing to commute down to Denver or Boulder.
The foothills are very windy and the weather is highly variable. There can be times of little snow or snow melting and other times where you can get a paralyzing blizzard.

Big question is what do you mean by horse property? Is it a place where you can stable a horse or a place with acres for the horse to have a large corral? The next question would be price.

Montrose is a great area. Nice climate, nice people, good amenities and if you need something more, you can travel an hour to Grand Junction
