The old original part of New Castle sits hard against I-70. There are new subdivisions (very pricey, in my opinion, like most of western Colorado these days) in the surrounding area. The new subs are like suburbia stuck in the foothills. The town itself wasn't damaged, but there have been a couple of forest fires that have have burned very close to New Castle in the last few years. Also, there is an old coal mine fire that has been burning underground in a coal seam across the Colorado River from the town since the 'teens. A business acquaintance of mine used to be the mayor there before the growth went nuts.

Why New Castle? That's a long commute to Aspen. I would not live any farther away than Glenwood Springs, and Carbondale would be better. You are paying a lot for housing anyway, you should be happier being closer to work.

It's hard to believe route 82 out of Aspen is one of the most crowded commuting roads in the state, although it is much better since they made it 4 lanes.

I just got a teaching job in NEw Castle and I could use some help finding a place to rent. I am planning on moving in late July early August. I don't mind commuting, but not too far. If anyone knows [mod cut] the best places to look for renting please let me know! Thanks!!

Default JenD...

HEY Jen! I also just got a teaching job in New Castle! I am hired for the Kindergarten position at either Elk Creek or Katheryn Senor, whichever they decide. What are you going to teach?? My husband and I are also struggling to find an affordable place to rent because we have 2 doggies. Email me if you want to chit-chat about our new jobs and New Castle and stuff. We won't know anyone out there (we are moving from Michigan) so we are hoping to meet other new teachers.

Have you visited the area yet? We have not but my aunt and uncle (who live in Denver) went to check it out and took a lot of pictures for us. I could send you some if you want. We are SOOOO EXCITED!

Hopefully I will hear from you!

Chelsea

I agree with BillRadio. New Castle would easily be an hour commute each way to Aspen. If you want to be happier, despite the extra cost, I would look in the El Jebel or Basalt areas. Because your husband will be employed in Pitkin County, your family would be eligible for affordable housing depending on your income. Check the Pitkin County website for more info. You could also check out Keator Grove in Carbondale which is an brand new resident owner occupied project with decent prices.

I currenlty live in Glenwood Springs and the whole Roaring Fork Valley (from GWS to Aspen) is one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. New Castle is just west of Glenwood Springs and is really only a bedroom community. There is not much of a town to speak of, but it does have a sufficient grocery store and a bank. You can buy a bigger, newer home there for less than in the Roaring Fork Valley, but that is the only advantage.

If you want some pictures of New Castle, you should search the MLS for real estate and view some of the pictures. Our area has a great real estate search system becasue property has been in such high demand over the past several years.

If you have any specific questions, let me know and I can probably answer them since I live so close.

Good Luck. I think you will love it here.

Default Benefits

Here are my thoughts on New Castle. I live here, and contrary to the previous poster I would prefer to live here (all else being equal, including housing prices) than in Glenwood Springs. Why? Dont get me wrong, I love GWS and spend a lot of time there, but so do all the tourists and commuters going up and down highway 82 (AKA Glenwoods main street) all morning and evening on their way to jobs upvalley (read, Aspen). I play in Glenwood (10 minutes away from my home), soak in the springs or go on to Carbondale for hikes etc. whenever I want to... then I leave, drive my 10 minutes and get away from all the hustle and bustle that in GWS. The skies are dark, there is no street noise (New Castle-- Castle Valley Ranch-- is buffered from the interstate by a remnant of the Grand Hogback), and there is no traffic. NC has several parks, hiking trails (into the pine and juniper that is interspersed throughout the town), ponds, and Elk Creek which is a cold, clear water creek coming down from the Flattops and emptying into the Colorado river. I see it as the best of both worlds, but I guess it really depends on what you are looking for...

I will be relocating to CO from MI (hopefully) soon, if I get the job. The job is in Glenwood Springs, but I'm looking to live in New Castle. The main reason is that there are more housing options. Plus, my parents, who are retired, will be moving, too, and looking for their own home. My understanding is that on average, New Castle is warmer than GWS and less snow. It's more like the weather in Grand Junction. Is this true?

New Castle is marginally warmer than GWS (they are only 15 minutes apart), it still can get snow, ice and winter weather.
