Currently, the bid from SW is at $170m.
Southwest bids $170 million for Frontier Airlines - The Denver Post

If we get a million people to pitch in, we can keep it to ourselves for a couple hundred bucks each. What do you think? I'm in for at least $250.

Of course, we'll need someone who actually knows how to purchase and operate a major airline in order to keep it running for all of us to use. Any volunteers?

Sure! Can I write a check?

Friday was the last day to be added to the bidders. Now, their faith is SW unless republic airlines outbids them in the auction that is coming up.

Shame. Love the idea, though I think it would take something like 680,000 of us to pitch in $250 each just to match SouthWest's bid =(

Yeah, and we only have 3 in so far. Bummer. I really can't stand that SW cattle call at boarding time. frontier has been great in every way, I'll surely miss them.

Me too. Was nice having a direct flight to get back home. Now with southwest I'll have to stop in Chicago.

Great news!!!!!

Republic Airlines has won the bid for Frontier Airlines:

9NEWS.com | Colorado's Online News Leader | Republic, not Southwest, wins bid for Frontier (http://www.9news.com/news/article.aspx?storyid=121298&catid=339 - broken link)

This is really good to hear. I really love Frontier, and I hated to hear that the cattle-hearding Southwest was trying to buy our hometown airline. Apparently, Republic Airlines only bid $108 million while Southwest bid $170 million, but Southwest was unable to workout a deal with Frontier Airlines' labor union.

Hit the road, Southwest...

Great news for competition in Denver. I'm kind of surprised that Southwest folded, because they certainly could have bid higher if they wanted, and definitely had plenty of cash to do so. Hopefully, Southwest won't now take its marbles and go home after losing; as a consumer I do like having them around Denver even if their not my #1 choice.

As for the bids, from what I've read Frontier did owe Republic quite a bit of money in bankruptcy since Republic used to do all their Regional Jet flying, and then Frontier broke off the contract without payment while in bankruptcy. I believe Republic's claim was around $120M (not bothering to check to verify the exact number), which of course they are completely writing off with the purchase. No way they would have actually gotten 100% of their money in bankruptcy court, but removing that claim sweetens the pot for the other Frontier creditors in bankruptcy court considerably.

In hindsight, it seems clear that Republic was already eying purchasing Frontier when they put in the $120M claim. Smart move on their part I must say.
