Hey folks its plain and simple, you do not move to your "livable mountain town" if you do not have a ton of $$ to subsidize your cost of daily living. It's especially true now with this economic downturn. Plan on sharing a place with 3-4 people, having 3-4 "jobs" and being frugal. Thats the deal, been there, done that.

For the "educated"
Don't overlook Colorado Mountain College,
There are often pretty good paying jobs throughout the CMC network
(throughout the High Country of Central CO-Rifle too)
I worked for several years at CMC Leadville making close to 20.00 an hour in a tech capacity- very good benefits as well. Not a Bay Area wage, but decent
A few years ago, instructors with Masters level were in pretty high demand.
Just an idea

I am not looking for a tourist town but a liveable one. Just spent time in Trinidad and that is a nice town, looked at lots in the Weston area which is about 1/2 drive off of 512 West of Trinidad. I saw lots that would be affordable there. Need to do more research though because I am certainly aware of gas and oil companies, having a ranch in Eastern OKlahoma. We wouldn't need jobs, this is a retirement type of move.

We looked at moving to CO about 5 yrs ago. We looked all along the highway from Denver to Utah.. down to salida too.. We couldnt find a real house (not a trailer in a trailer park ) for under 120k. Its WAY expensive there.. Does it HAVE to be CO? We are looking into NW AR right now and its cheap and still amazing views of mtns.
The only really cool town I liked in CO in the mtns was Manitou Springs west of CO springs area. Very cool mtn town but like others have said.. VERY hard to make a living in a mtn town. Its all seasonal w/o strong year round jobs there.

Northwest AR is much different than Colorado but then again you were looking in more populated areas in Colorado. My parents just moved to a town in Northwest Arkansaw called Bella Vista and THEY LOVE IT. Your are right about the price. If you want to be with lots of seniors from different States, a very beautiful fun filled area, Bella Vista is for you. The problem I see is way too much traffic for my liking. Although, if you go a little east of Bella Vista the traffic slows down. I've looked at Beaver Lake which is near Bella Vista and found that to be a quite a beautiful area.

Look in the Glenwood Springs area. It can be expensive, but there are more affordable options in New Castle and Silt, which are not far away. Lots to do and has most of the modern conviences available. Lots of ski resorts within an hour, the Colorado river and Roaring fork intersect in Glenwood, mountains all around and great biking paths. Check out the local newspaper for jobs and other info. Glenwood Springs Colorado | PostIndependent.com News
Good luck
