Hi,
I'm thinking of renting a Uhual and driving to Colorado. Will an experienced person please offer some insights/advice?
How much was uhual rental and was it reliable?
How was your drive and which route did you take?
Where did you stop and spend the night?
Uhual vs Penske, which do you prefer and why?

Ca-girl, I used U-Haul when I moved from Albuquerque to where I live now and didnt have any trouble. I dont know anything about Penske but I can say U-Haul was just fine. I know it wasnt from CA to CO so maybe someone can fill you in on that one but anyway, good luck on your move.

Hello and welcome to city-data....
I've seen posts on here, maybe not in CO, but on this site, that rental rates coming OUT of Cali are through the roof. You can get today's rental prices either on their websites or by calling them up and asking. If it seems outrageous, try calling a GOOD mover, like Mayflower, Allied, Bekins, United Van Lines, etc for a free estimate. If may be about the same, not sure.
Also seen posts that folks are MUCH happier with Ryder or Penske than with Uhaul, which we see broken down on the highway so many times. The stories about Uhaul on TV shows like 60 Minutes, in years past, were not good.
Please use the Advanced Search, across the entire site, with keywords like Uhaul or Ryder or Penske or rental truck to find tons of info that is already here.
There is also advice in here about NOT bringing old furniture. See this one: http://www.city-data.com/forum/other...ight=furniture
If your situation fits, you may want to leave it behind. We have a chain of stores here selling very nice things for about half what the nicer galleries sell furniture for.
Uhaul is always the cheapest. Take I-80 to Cheyenne, WY and then head south on I-25. You can stop over and spend the night in Salt Lake City. It is about half way.

This is true. Just for fun I went to the Uhaul website. Typed in from Des Moines to California, and then California to Iowa. CA to IA was double what it costs to rent one from IA to CA. Reason being is because so many people are leaving Cali and paying whatever to do it. They're making it hard just to leave this state.
Being that I too moved from CA Bay area not that long ago and just recently (April 07) relocated yet again to Colorado I can give you an up to date perspective. But first a warning - try not to to do two interstate moves in 2.5 yrs if you can avoid it!!!
I priced my move from N Cal to Las Vegas in summer 05. My 26" truck and a car carrier from Penske, cost me ~$4500. An additional 14" from Uhaul cost me an additional $1300. I was unprepared because I really didn't think my house would sell that fast (it did) and I made my resevation in late July for an August move- school starts in late August - so I paid top dollar to get out of Cali. Something to note - sign up for AAA if you go with Penske & make your reservation online - you'll get an additional 15% discount off the internet pricing. The Penske equipment was brand new -less than 1000 miles on it and the UHaul was on its last legs. **Second Warning - don't move during "high season" May thru Oct unless you've tagged your moving costs onto the sales price of your house or sell everything first. (upside is that if you move for your job, you can deduct these costs on next yrs taxes.)**
This year I bought a house (much to my honey's relief) back in his hometown of Denver, but I/we had to move before the middle of April, due to my job shipping me off this summer. So I priced out UHaul & Penske and once again chose Penske. This move took (2) 26" trucks, (1) 22" truck and 1 car carrier for a total tab of just over ~$4,100. All the equipment was less than 2yrs old and had less than 7,000 miles on it. Uhaul's prices were almost double. **Third Warning - Take the time to have a garage sale if at all possible - the guys loading and unloading the truck(s) will thank you!!**
On the trip out to Denver, the car carrier blew a tire in a canyon outside Grand Junction, but Penske had a repair guy out to us in about an hour on a holiday weekend. They even made a followup call later to make sure we were back on the road okay. Although I refuse to move again for at LEAST 10 years, I have to say my experience w/ Penske was unparalelled. When I called in March to change the reservation dates (job assignment changed), they we more than willing to accomodate my new dates and were pleasant and professional throughout.
As for dropoffs in the N/NW Denver areas - I had a selection of places to choose from and it was quick and painless. I'm sure UHaul has a decent product (I bought all my moving boxes from them & Allied)- especially for local moves (Penske doesn't pan out for short hauls), but my experiences have made me a loyal Penske customer.
I do hope this helps and really - consider a garage sale - You don't want to be unpacking furniture and boxes forever!!
I just moved from the bay area to Colorado, and Uhaul prices were through the roof. We used a company called Moovers Inc. (www.mooversinc.com) - they did all the loading, driving and unloading for barely more money than renting a Uhaul ($4,500 for 7,600 lbs of stuff). I would highly recommend you check them out, they will come to your home to do a free estimate. You can read other reviews of them and other moving companies at the MovingScam web site.
I rented a Penske truck for my move across country from North Carolina to Montana. I had heard that U-haul trucks are not well kept, plus they do not actually guarantee you the truck you want at the time you want it. We had had a bad experience with U-haul previously. I highly recommend Penske, the rate was much better than U-haul, (especially if you join AAA before your move and get their discount), they guarantee you the truck you want when you want it, and their customer service is FIRST RATE and professional, and there are no hidden charges. I had to delay my move several times and that was no problem. They also have "live chat" customer service representatives if you need questions answered while online, and I found that very helpful in planning my move. Penske trucks are newer than other companies, that was important to me as a woman traveling alone across country - my Penske truck was almost brand spanking new, only 2,000 miles were on it!
