Thanks for the info. I used to have a Secret clearance when I was active, but that was 5 years ago.

A secret is good for 10 years so you might be able to reactivate it. If not, don't be too concerned as you can probably get an interim through your new employer in a matter of days, which is all you need for many if not most large contracts.

Clearances go a long ways in the D.C. area. With an active clearance you can literally walk into the office of a contractor (beltway bandit) and they'll hire you on the spot.

Wanted to know if anyone could suggest some companies to look at that could be hiring for entry level engineering positions. I have a bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering (09') from the University of Michigan. I currently live in Northern California and I'm looking to move to the Colorado (Denver or Colorado springs areas) sometime next year. My girlfriend and I have decided that the SF Bay Area is not where we want to live and raise kids in the future.

I currently have a crap retail job and am desperate to get some engineering experience. Would the fact that I am a Marine Corps veteran help my chances with all the military presence in the area?
Sorry to intrude on the CO forum, however, you are in the SF Bay Area so here's my .02:

My husband is an engineering manager.

I brought your situation to his attention and he said the UofM has a good engineering school. However, your educational background is probably Automotive Engineering focus even though your degree is in ME.

Coming from a dark blue State such as Michigan may not work in your favor with the Japanese and European automakers in the Southern US. They have purposely avoided building plants in blue States like OH, PA, MI, IL and IN. You can read all about this online, I am only calling this to your attention.

At this point in your job search and this country's history, you're going to have to move where the jobs are and not where you'd LIKE to live. Sorry.

Aerospace and defense contractors are being very particular about hiring someone with EXACT educational and job experience even for veterans. Layoffs and job posting deletion have already taken place in Aurora. His current Director was a recent Director in Aurora who transferred, so he has a very good idea of what's going on.

My advice goes for the pharma industry as well. EXACT qualifications for each job posting or forget it. The pharma industry tends to be exclusionary and they like to hire their own.

Sorry, but this country is going to have to become business friendly and re-allow:

Commercial fishing
Logging and Forestry
Oil Drilling
Textile Mills

...and allow people to perform honest labor with their hands as in past millennia or they will end up unable to find work as what's happening today. Unfortunately, there is an entire generation that is opposed to this.

Best to you,

Edited to add:

In order to get a Clearance of any sort, be prepared to not have any: convictions, garnishments, foreclosures, bankruptcies, court judgments. Minimal civil actions against you. Good FICO (720+) score. Most of the Clearance jobs in VA are for Secret and above. If you are a vet with a clear record (Honorable Discharge) you should do OK.

PS: Do not quit any job you currently have until you have been hired for a job with an offer letter in hand. Recent example: friend with an out-of-State (VA) law degree had a law job here in Central CA. Quit the job and moved to SoCal with no job offer - felt she could have a better chance of getting a job if she lived there. Big mistake since a bias exists for local grads of
CA local universities and colleges. She ended up not getting a job after a year of looking and had to move home and live with the parents. Ran out of money.
