What about Golden ? (Denver, Lakewood, Arvada: houses, neighborhoods, shops)

My husband and me have a couple homes in the mountains but one of them is in Evergreen (right above Golden). You'd probably like it there alot! Alot more than Golden because it's full of pollution. Come checkout our town of Evergreen, uou'd really like it and Golden is just a short distance away down the canyon.

I am the originator of the "Where are the walkable neighborhoods?" thread. I just returned from a week in the Denver area, and I must say that I really like Golden. It really does have a small town feel to it. The foothills surround the town, and I think this makes it physically feel like a small town because you don't have a large expansive view of a bazillion other houses. Plus the downtown area has a lot of character. Some might not like the downtown because it's not trendy (like Jackson Hole is trendy)...it's got local shops. Having Clear Creek running through downtown is a great asset. I get the sense that as one goes about town (e.g., the Saturday morning Farmer's Market, or walking along the creek), one would stand a fair chance of bumping into someone they know. I found the people very friendly. It's a bit hilly for my taste (hard to stroll the kids), and I didn't care for the motorcycles riding through downtown (I hear that they do that through more upscale Evergreen as well) or the bars there. But one does feel an authenticity there. I looked at many places, such as Denver, Stapleton, Westminster, Arvada, Boulder, Lakewood, and the mountain communities. Obviously, people have different tastes, but I think Golden has some pretty attractive features.
