There is no
"used to be recognized" (emphasis mine) for Weld County; there is a "still is recognized" as a leading agricultural county nationwide.
Weld County is the top agricultural county east of California.
Of the top 10 agricultural counties in the US, 9 are in California . Weld County is the lone non-Californian county (ranked #9).
It will stay this way for the foreseeable future.
Impressive. I didn't know that.
I learned something new.

I would agree that Weld County is still an agricultural powerhouse by any definition, but its future for that is definitely imperiled. One need only look at the amount of Weld County ag land lost to development in the last 20 or so years to see that. Also, much of its water comes out of the South Platte River system and the aquifers that have been proven to be tributary to the South Platte. That water has become a major target for the Front Range municipalities to expropriate, which they are doing with considerable success. All of that bodes ill for Weld County maintaining itself as a major agricultural producer.
Anyone who can not see those perils is indeed blind. I've been familiar with Weld County for nearly a half-century. The changes--many very negative--that I've seen in that county in that time are staggering--easily enough so for me to hold an "apocalyptic" view if those trends continue. I'm not alone, either. Many who recognize it better than anyone are the farmers and ranchers in the county. A lot of them are voting with their feet--selling out of Weld County and moving to areas less hostile to agriculture than Weld County (and all of Colorado, for that matter). I run into ex-Weld County farmers and ranchers now plying their occupations in Nebraska, Wyoming, Kansas, etc. all the time.

Good. Glad they've found greener pastures. And now we can focus more on the needs of the people who are currently citizens of Colorado.

1886
'
The early settlers of Greeley constructed their first water system, a series of infiltration wells in the City. The well water quality diminished as nutrients from surrounding farms flowed into the wells. The water continued to degrade until 1900 when the citizens decided to look for a new source.' [1]
Western Weld County is becoming greater Fort Collins east. Once prime farmland is being subsumed to quickly growing subdivisions. Additionally, anyone driving the backroads there will soon appreciate how much oil and gas extraction is already in the area. If not ground zero for fracking in Colorado, Weld County might as well be. None of this is good for agriculture.
Put none to delicately, the citizens of this state largely through ignorant disinterest are allowing their politicians to act as bad stewards for today's and future generations that might live here. This not at all excluding their willful disregard for the effects of rampant population growth—and now in direct contravention to the welfare of Coloradoans also welcoming hoards of poor, ignorant and often dangerous illegal aliens by giving them Colorado driver licenses. It will not just be farmers looking to move out of state, but those as well just wanting to protect their children from any number of growing bad influences in their schools, etc.
Insofar as agriculture, there are over 3,000 farms in Weld County, with 75% of its 2.5 million acres devoted to livestock or farming. It is the state's largest producer of dairy products, sugar beets, grain and cattle. The agricultural products of Weld County have a market value of $1,000,000,000.[2] At least for now.
Perhaps Weld County could serve in example as microcosm of Colorado past and possible future. Since inception this area has recognized the vital importance of water. The Grand Ditch in Rocky Mountain National Park was constructed before RMNP was a formal park, with but one purpose: to divert West Slope water to the needs of the East Slope. That ditch funnels that small river of water into the Cache la Poudre River, flowing down through Fort Collins and then points east. Having soon exhausted and polluted—in getting an early start on the rampant use of pesticides and neuron-toxins on and into Colorado land and water—the water they had, they naturally looked for more—from elsewhere. Such as, in 1904, buying a farm with senior water rights in Bellvue, near the mouth of the Cache la Poudre River issuing from the mountains. Yet as recently as 2002 there were serious water shortage issues in the county, due climate change.
Thus one might think Weld County in particular would have a keen appreciation for the value of water and interest in preserving it. Apparently not. As evident their seeming greater interest in money in the short term, displayed in ever more prime farmland being subsumed by suburban sprawl, and in allowing the widespread deployment of fracking which is literally blowing up all their underlying geology. They will go to the wall for a single irrigation ditch, but evidence little interest in the millions of gallons of water used in a single fracking well, nor the toxic results left. Within agricultural land.
If such a mindset allowing, indeed sanctioning and encouraging such behavior is nothing new in Colorado. Other than a few odd explorers, the first white men were trappers principally interested in how many beaver pelts they could gather. The real influx began in 1858 with the discovery of gold, with their interests largely extractive as well. For better or worse what this modern state was founded on: hard rock mining.
With ongoing legacies such as the Pennsylvania Mine, located east of Keystone up along Peru Creek. That which feeds into the Snake River, and that into the Blue River within Lake Dillon (this reservoir of Denver's drinking water). Among a host of other contenders in this state, the long abandoned Pennsylvania Mine has the dubious distinction of being the worst in Colorado, unleashing acidic water and any number of heavy metals. One result of this mine is the extinction of all fish in these rivers for a good distance downriver. With an interest in remediating this now (absent any contribution from long gone mine owners), the state of Colorado and all its taxpayers are on the hook for many millions in clean up costs. [3]
So strange that we now address some serious environmental affronts of long standing, while largely ignoring others such as the Climax molybdenum mine, and elsewhere turning a blind eye to the ongoing desecration of our water resources due such as fracking. We are not at all on the same page with any of this. Even if nature always works in unison and will demand balance in one way or another.
Colorado is in serious trouble, economically, demographically, in degradation of mores, environmentally, and more. Her problem is us. And few have learned the lessons of the past that would best inform a beneficial future.

Yeah, like hordes of non-productive retirees, trustfunders, welfare recipients, illegal aliens, and dopeheads. I'll take the farmers and ranchers over them any day.

Choosing sides is the old school thinking largely responsible for the mess we're in right now. Since we are ALL here in Colorado ( ironically except for you and I ), let us rather find a way to make it work for everybody without proclaiming one group to be better or more deserving than any other group. Maybe John Lennon was on to something when he asked us to Give Peace A Chance .

Well, this old gal living on a fixed income on a ranch in Western Colorado is digging in for the long term. I'm not very easy to get rid of either. I ain't scairt of any of you and anyone who loves the Colorado Mountains is by definition a friend of mine, although we can skip the group hug part. I have quite a few more thoughts to add but no time to post them now. I gotta go pick up my welfare check, see if the illegal aliens are still hiding in the barn and if Ralf remembered to switch the irrigation wheels on the back 40. And we have not yet begun the fight. Not even.

"Non-productive retirees?"
Aren't most retirees spending their money in local economies, not putting kids into schools, supposedly not wanting lawns to mow, and likely driving a whole lot less than people with jobs? Maybe volunteering time and money to "productive" ventures that they couldn't while working?

Not to mention....the entire attitude of Jazzlover's post made it seem like being a retiree was a bad thing. Retirees were mostly likely very productive in their working years and have earned their retirement. Jazzlover's making it sound like the minute one hits 65, one should be shot.
Jazzlover's posts may have a lot of useful information, but I am a bit tired of the snide attitude that seems to come with it. And given that this individual is no longer in the state and makes it plain they're happy to be gone, I can't help but wonder what streak of masochism causes them to come back and keep posting in these forums.
