Default Cities' hunt for water sources marches on

Interesting article on how Colorado's cities are trying to secure more water.

"While the state is spending $1.5 million to try to figure out ways to avoid drying up farmland, cities are continuing to hunt for farm water they can own."

Joss, what do you think about this article?

Fremont County gives green light to SDS

Doesn't mean it's written in stone yet, but it might mean Pueblo Reservoir won't be at such a high level as it has been lately.

The way I see this is that in the end, money talks. Who has more money, Colorado Springs and Aurora or Pueblo? If you're thinking any answer that involves the latter, don't bother answering the question.

Flashforward to Joss comment:

Now you're just sounding childishly selfish. And this is probably not true. How many square feet is your lawn front and back now? What do you say you're paying in the summer months to water your lawn? $200.00+? What if that number does go up? What if it say... doubles? Then how do you feel about paying 400-500 per? And you lose your job and your family business goes down and you're flippin' burgers for 7.10 per? Where will your priorities go then? I like a green lawn and all, but I'm more concerned with a nice fresh cold glass of water from my tap. Some people don't even have that.

Dream on... I'll believe it once I see one new employee bringing his lunch pail to work there in that 77,000 workforce in your coveted Pueblo Springs. Are they taking applications yet?

Well duh What, do you take 135 minute showers too, and wash one article of clothing per wash too? When I look at my water bill, I don't try to subtract out what I use on the lawn and what I use on everything else. My base water usage is about 14 bucks per month and is negligible. Any thing after that is probably for the lawn.

PSSS...

Yep, Colorado Springs was negotiating with Pueblo as delivery from the Pueblo resevoir would have cost less to build. Unfortunately, Pueblo wanted enough extra $$$ and was putting up enough problems that going upriver (Arkansas river) with a longer pipeline became more financially advantageous for Colorado Springs.

Pueblo lost out on a stronger final position of having the water come from their resevoir instead of from upstream.

I say fine let them build it in Fremont county, it will cost them more, and not affect my water supply. I will still have plenty of cheap water for my lawn.

It will be interesting too see how companies look at the different rates in the future, especially if Colorado Springs has to raise their rates as much as I hear they will. Pueblo is getting a tech park just sooth of the El Paso county line, I wonder if companies will move there to be by both cities yet be a lot cheaper, better for their bottom line...

And it wont change the fact that places like Aurora lease their water from Pueblo, Colorado Springs has never leased any water from us so that will not affect anything there.

I pay 200 for about two months of the summer the but that is for all my water use not just my lawn.

Agreed if my bill goes up like it will in the Springs I would re consider how much water I use but since I have been living here, and I am 35, we have not seen a major increase and from what I can tell none is forecasted in Pueblo...

Also, for the record, my objection has never been for the Springs to get their water, its their water they should get it. But given their record on how they treat the Fountain river my position has been if they want to get the water from Pueblo County they should take it east of the confluence of the Fountain and Arkansas river that way it gives them a extra incentive to give us clean water. If not then they can build it in another county as far as I am concerned....

Regardless of where the SDS gets built Pueblo is on the Arkansas river and has some of the most senior water rights in the state as well as the Bessemer ditch now and it has senior rights as well so Pueblo will continue to have the power when it comes to water....

And you still don't give a dam(n) about all of the dried up farms, ranches, and wetlands; the dammed up and flooded canyons, and destroyed natural riparian areas--all so you can irrigate that lawn of yours.

I'm not surprised. Nothing changes.

Very true - I don't think people with the mindset like this think about where the water is sourced from. On CO's front range it ain't coming from rainwater (rain water that falls on the Front Range)...
