Coloradoans in the Mtns? (Denver, Boulder: motel, home, employment)

I've lived my whole life in Colorado and I thought back and couldn't recall ever meeting a Coloradoan from the mountains, or one that ski's or goes to the mountains for recreation regularly. Have you? Then again I've always been on the plains, so maybe there's a difference.

Yes. When I lived in Boulder I knew many people who grew up here who skied and hiked in the mountains regularly. Now that I live in the foothills I know many, many more. If it were not for them I probably would not have taken up skiing. Perhaps it is your lack of proximity that has kept you from enjoying them?

We lived in Salida for over 3 years. Skied over 30 days/winter. I have friends there and stay two weekends/month. Rural high country life is SO much better than living on this brown bald prairie (front range). RP

I know plenty of native Coloradoans who use the mountains regularly for recreation.

We live in Denver and ski on a regular basis. We go to the mountains just about every weekend in the summer, mainly to hike. I thought everyone did, especially when you look at the traffic coming back to Denver on a Sunday afternoon!

I've lived in Colorado all my life and spent well over two decades in power plant construction and a couple years pipeline construction. Worked with a lot of guys from all areas of the state and the guys I knew the best and respected the most were from small mountain towns on the western slope; Del Norte, Norwood, Nucla, Durango, Ignacio, Dolores, and other towns. The pipeline I worked on in '82 was Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas. Got to know a lot of Hispanic and Native American laborers from Penasco, Chimayo, Farmington, and other areas.

Most of them stayed in their native towns and worked out of town construction. While a few of them moved to Denver or other big cities for employment opportunity, the majority kept their places as they had no desire to live on Colorado's front range other than to motel it during the week and go home on weekends.

It's pretty easy to become allergic to citys. I would come to the "city" by necessity maybe 2 or 3 times a year.
My neighbor (Salida native) would get his pals together and wait till a full moon was on a Saturday in Dec., Jan., or Feb. Leave around midnight, start climbing a 14er around 2am, summit at sunrise. How amazing is that. People are different in the high country. RP

Everyone's different. I grew up in a medium sized town in the Rocky Mountains. I'm equally comfortable in a big city or camping in the mountains and I enjoy spending about equal time on both.

How long do you have to live in CO to be considered a Coloradoan? My father has lived there for about 10 years now. Every weekend he is running mountain trails or snow skiing... camps a bit as well.
