Trying to determine the most suitable (summer) route for travelling to Telluride, in terms of duration and ease of drive. Considering flying into Salt Lake City, Albuquerque or Montrose and then driving into Telluride.

Montrose is obviously the easiest drive but also more expensive to fly into.

Any suggestions on one over the other?

Could you fly into Durango or even Cortez for less? It looks like SLC or Albuquerque would be really long drives so what you save on the flight you might end up spending on the car.

To be honest, I had not looked at Durango or Cortez. Most sites I had searched regarding Telluride travel pointed towards the Telluride airport or Montrose. From a quick glance, it looks as if flights into Durango and Cortez are much cheaper than Montrose.

Any comments on the Durango or Cortez airports?

Also, curious why mapquest would send you through Cortez (from Durango) to get to Telluride, as opposed to going up 550.

I don't think you can get to Telluride from 550. Or it might not be a road you want to take as it's mostly unpaved.

Also, it's actually shorter going from Durango than from Cortez because you cut out a lot of smaller roads so flying there would be the better option.

Read the map! Unless you want to Jeep over a 13,000 foot pass, US550 won't get you near Telluride.

Also consider flying into Grand Junction, CO which is 65 miles north of Montrose on mostly flat 4 lane highway.

If you plan to visit only Telluride, you really don't need a car while you're there. So flying into Montrose and taking a shuttle should be priced against your other options (rental car needed).

You can take 550 up from Durango thru Silverton and then on to Ouray. Go past Ouray and turn Left at Ridgway. The pros/cons of of the two routes (one is 120 miles, the other is 111 miles) have been discussed a lot here and on the tripadvisor forums.

I went to Telluride from Durango, first through Mancos (near Cortez) and back though this route. Both were about the same time and both very beautiful drives.

Sorry Jazzlover, but you don't have to take that road!

Telluride has shuttle buses than run from the airports to town. Here's the link:

A Guide to Transportation in and Around Telluride Colorado including private limo service

Don't know if it's cheaper than renting a car. Once in Telluride you won't need a car. Everything is in walking distance and you can take the gondola to Mountain Village.

Folks, thanks for the info. All things considered, Grand Junction seems to be the best spot to fly into.

Montrose was far and away the most expensive between there, Grand Junction, Durango and Cortez. Durango/Cortez could have worked, but Grand Junction had the most options with the lowest fares... not to mention ShellKing's comments regarding the easy drive.
