Its where Stephen Kings The Shining was based on. He stayed there when he lived in Boulder in the 70s and he was inspired by the idea of a haunted hotel snowed out in the mountains.

I toured it back when I was a bit of a fan of his novels.

BTW: The original Stanley Kubrick movie is nothing like the original novel.

Thw wife and I stay there back in 2005. We had a really nice time. We had fun convincing ourselves that some of the weird noises we heard were surely ghosts. That's fun when you are skeptics like the wife and I are. Good place for a base of operations for hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park. Make sure to visit the Estes Park Brewery for some good beer. They make awesome creme soda and root beer, as well, if you don't drink alcohol.

Stayed there a number of times on business trips through the area back in the 1970's-1980's.

Apparently, these were times when the old hotel was having financial difficulties and changes of ownership ... so it was pretty run down, almost decrepit ... despite it's past of being a high class hotel operation. The rooms I stayed in weren't better than the Motel 6's in the region, and weren't as nicely furnished or as clean.

I didn't come away from there impressed by any haunting except for the high cost and low quality of product on offer.

Maybe the fact that it was run-down made it more spooky to some people. That would have been the time King would've been there.

GhostHunters from the Sci-Fi channel have done several episodes from there and were always able to capture some pretty interesting evidence of paranormal activity. Check Youtube for some of the video. It's one of their favorite locations to investigate because of the activity.

On another note, a good buddy of mine stayed there with his girlfriend a couple summers ago and actually got to stay in one of the "famous" rooms. He of course, gave me the scoop when he got back to work the following Monday.

They didn't experience anything unusual, but he was rather annoyed during his entire stay because other guests were constantly outside his door in the hallway talking and taking pictures in front of his room.

In the middle of the night, on separate occassions....other guests actually knocked on the room door, woke them up and asked to see their room.

Ugh! I would've created a couple of new ghosts in the hotel if I that were my room.
