I'm just curious, how are the residents in Chaffee County? Are they nice, quiet, to them selves, or fun, outgoing and ready to help in any situation? Also, the schools in Salida seem to be getting better every year, how are the teens in the area? We want to move their but have a 7th grader and she's concerned about the kids, and meeting new friends. She's very social and into church, cheer, band, choir, also a straight A student. Any help would be great. thanks!

Salida is pretty tight knit community (like most small high country towns). Most who come (without State or Fed job) are economically eliminated in 2-3 yrs (no jobs and fairly high cost of living).
Locals know this so it makes it difficult to make long term friendships as they think you too will be gone soon.
Once you've lived there for 3-4 years they will likely warm up to you.
So don't be surprised to not be welcomed with open arms until you've lived there for a while.
My $.02

Although I don't know a single person in Chaffee county, I'll go out ona limb and say that some residents are nice, and some are not. Some residents are quiet, and some are boisterous. Some residents are outgoing, and some keep to themselves. Some residents are fun, while others are sticks in the mud. Some residents are ready to help in any situation, and some residents will be more selective.

Tsample, out of the 15,000 residents in Chaffee County, I'm sure you'll find all kinds. I live there part time and have no trouble meeting people and making friends. But then I'm very outgoing and talk to people everywhere (drives my husband crazy). Our friends include our real estate agent, our neighbors, the guy who owns the coffee shop, people in the exercise class, the checker at the grocery store, etc.

Overall most of the people I've met have been warm and welcoming. I think that, as in small towns anywhere, people come together to help each other in times of need and leave you alone when you want to be alone.

Srry, but I don't know about the schools. I do know that BV is pretty happening in the summer, with the influx of young 20 somethings who work at the many rafting companies in the area.

thanks everyone for replying. I'm still trying to figure the dynamics of this forum and didn't realize I had replies. FOLLOW UP: I think we are in love with Loveland and maybe even Berthoud. Found out, we have friends that have been there awhile and a family member that just moved their recently. So, we'll see....

Thanks again!!

tsample - FYI - Loveland and Berthoud are way way different from Chaffee County. Loveland is in the Front Range, Chaffee County is rural with much of it set within the Arkansas River Valley. Very different look and feel, economy, weather, outdoor activities, etc. Also the schools in Salida have recently received very high accreditation (you can probably find if you do a search). martyg - we live a couple miles from Salida. Here's the latest photos shots looking to the west. Respectable amount of snow and our first winter storm since we moved in a week ago. So white we can't see the 14'ers beyond. In short, more snow on the way.

Look real close at the first photo and you can see a couple of deer lying below a tree.

Thanks! Much appreciated...The day after my last post brought back the 14'ers per photo.

This morning it's snowing. I know a few might think it's odd that I enjoy the snow. It just give me the appearence of peace in my little world.
