Planning a road trip to that area of Colorado this summer. Anyone here have any suggestions or "must-see's" while there?

Thanks Folks...

Everything! But seriously, I would recommend Ouray, Red Mountain Pass, the Silverton-Durango Railroad, Black Canyon, Redstone and Marble. No matter what you see along the western slope, and mountain areas, it's Colorado, you won't be disappointed.

Thanks for the suggestions Jim. I look forward to my trip, and exploring the entire area.

I went to Black Canyon last summer. It's absolutely beautiful. It's not the biggest canyon in the US but it may be one of the most beautiful. The walls are amazingly steep and have great colors. Also, when I was there, about this time last year, it was very green the the surrounding areas. Allow plenty of time to see it. There are many different lookouts and each one offers a breathtaking view.

I prefer the North Rim of the Black Canyon to the south rim--very scenic, though, as noted in another thread, an individual is blackmailing the Park Service by threatening to build a trophy house on a private inholding that could compromise some of the most scenic views.

If one goes to the South Rim, a sidetrip to Crystal Dam is worth the trip--not to see the dam, but to see the river canyon below it--an example of what the reservoir builders destroyed when they built Blue Mesa, Morrow Point, and Crystal Reservoirs.

The North Fork Valley is very pretty, though about half of the orchard acreage once located in Delta County has been destroyed by rural subdivision development--very sad.

If you are here long enough, I would also recommend driving on HWY 50 over Monarch Pass (stop at the gift shop and ask for oxygen masks, I did, they laugh), and into Canon City and go over the Royal Gorge.
