My husband and I are looking into a potential move to Durango, coming from Montana. I have a great job opportunity and we have friends in the area. My husband is concerned though, as an avid hunter and having lived in a non hunting-friendly area of Colorado before.
So, can anyone tell me about hunting in the region (within a two-hour drive)? Specifically elk hunting. Is there much state land, and are people allowed to rifle and bow hunt on state land in the area? I'm sure a google search would yield this information, but I thought I'd start here first, asking the locals.
So, any information on how good or bad and how easily or not easily accessible elk hunting in the area is, would be appreciated!
Thanks all!

My husband and I moved here recently. He has been scoping out areas for elk hunting with his bow. There seems to be plenty of areas but learning about where they will be is key. We have national forest access in many spots and there are a couple of outdoor stores in the area with very helpful staff.
