Hope you all had a nice Memorial Day. What better way to celebrate our freedom than to go tear up a steep old Colorado Mountain? Hope you enjoy some of these;

That would be the Sangre de Cristos.

This has certainly been a topsy-turvy spring, weatherwise, though. The aspen are pretty late coming out just about everywhere, with a fair maount of snow left up high, but the lower elevations most places are already getting dry. Could be an interesting summer for fires if the Southwest Monsoon is either late or weak.

Yeah, it's already dry, hot and just a bit deceptively green. We would sure invite a few frog soakers and not just the sporatic and spotty thunderstorms. But it's not the norm, is it?

The cool thing about Phantom Canyon for those of us in Pueblo West is that this is about the quickest path for us into the hills. If you make this 15-20 mile trek from about Penrose, you're about 15 miles or about 45-60 minutes to a nice reservoir or two or you can go to Cripple Creek and say hello to my money, go on a Narrow Gauge ride, or have a nice meal for about 8 bucks and keep away from those "machines".

But if you're gonna go up Phantom Canyon, don't be in a hurry. Enjoy the ride, watch your speed, and it can be enjoyable. I think that folks who drive up these narrow dirt mountain roads need to realize that technically, the right of way goes to the uphill bound driver. So, when you head into a narrow turn/passage, be prepared to turnout and let another driver through. It isn't "Thou with the biggest tires wins!"
