I don't like condos or townhouses because you never know who is going to turn up the surround sound next door. There is no such thing as a "soundproof wall" IMHO. So if I choose one of the $129,000 homes I see listed in Irmo or Lexington, am I also moving to a less desirable area? Even if I could afford one, I don't want a big house.

You'll be able to find a nice neighborhood in that price range. I live in an in-town neighborhood with an average home price around $100,000 and I feel safe. As has been mentioned on other threads (and probably this one), South Carolina has a high rate of domestic crimes, which, while horrible, will not contribute to a general climate of being unsafe unless you are in a bad relationship. I don't know all the reasons why domestic problems are bad in South Carolina, but there aren't many areas where I would feel unsafe in the Columbia area. Like with any city, there are good neighborhoods and bad neighborhoods, but the good significantly outnumber the bad.

I think domestic violence is just as bad in any larger metro area around the nation. Simply watch "Cops" a few times and it becomes quite clear that most of the crime problems seem to be related in one way or another to personal relationships. So sad.

^But I think SC in particular has a more acute domestic violence problem. Why, I really have no idea.

I'm sure its the Media's slant of SC. Have you seen the recent story of SC highway patrolman that hit pedestrian suspects with their squad cars? The media gives a thick negative slant towards these kinds of stories coming from SC, which gives the rest of the country a bad impression of SC.

I had to comment about the idiocracy in this thread.First of all, the crime stats the OP posted on Irmo show that IRMO IS BELOW THE NATIONAL AVERAGE FOR CRIME. The chart she posted on the crime index says the U.S. average = 320.9. The chart then says the crime index for Irmo in 2005 is 283.6, in 2006 is 267.1, and in 2007 is 257.3!! So, if the national average is 320.9, and Irmo's average is 257.33, what does that mean? Is 257 less than 320? Did I hear you say yes? Well, then that means that crime in Irmo is less than the national average! Seriously, if you're scared because you've misread a chart & you're way too stupid to figure it out, please don't move to South Carolina. Our idiot quota has already been met. Second, when someone says SC reports more accurate crime stats than other states, that doesn't mean the citizens are more aware so they report more crimes as they see them being committed as some folks seemed to believe. It means SC's LE and government report the actual (or as close as possible) stats to the FBI whereas in other states LE and gov't may not be so honest about the stats they report. I was under the impression there are a disproportionate amount of idiots in this state, but after reading through this thread, I'm beginning to think the people in SC are actually much more logical and reasonable than elsewhere (scary).Thank you.

"Idiocrat"
Stories like this do not help...but every state have idiotic criminals so SC is adding its own third party I had never heard of "Buggery".. it more disturbing that it had to become a law to encourage people NOT to do it!!!!!

"Idiocrat II"
Ok I promise this is my last one but.....What is it with Sandlappers(term of endearment for south carolinians) and Animals????.... Ahemm .. these two crimes (horse rape and the ape suit attack) were in Myrtle Beach) so Charleston, Columbia and Greenville/Spartanburg can be thankful No seriously though.. the horse rape or 'buggery' is inexcusable and a terrible thing...but I wonder how he got the horse to come with him into the barn?? He must be a NAYYYSAYYER...ok Im really finished now....

actually, the worst part of the horse story is that it appeared to have happened before. meaning there was almost a "relationship" there.....
Now I may joke about "getting me some sugar", but as that is the name of the horse I'll stop using that little statement!

^The comments after the article in The State were hilarious. I'm sure they were all just horsing around.
