Whats up with the CRIME??!
WOW! I am amazed! We are thinking of relocating to the Lexington, Irmo area and did some reseach on the crime rates. I am dumb-founded, I never would have imagines the crime rates were so high. The national Average is 100 and most area in sc are well over that! Whats the problem there? Seriously, I dont get it! Such a beautiful place!

Honestly, for some reason, domestic violence seems to be worse in the south; why that is, I am dumbfounded. I've never felt unsafe being out and about, but I understand domestic violence accounts for crime figures tending to be higher. If you have good relations with your family, friends, spouse or significant other, you should be ok.

Another thing you should understand is that the state of South Carolina actually does a more thorough job than most other states in reporting crime statistics, which is why just about all of our metro areas post rates above the national average. So compared to other states/metro areas, our rates will be a little inflated. The good news is that the crime rate in metro Columbia has been trending downward for the past several years.

Don't read too much into a single crime statistic or ranking. In 2004 the FBI stopped offering it's Crime Index because often the value was being driven by property crimes like burglary, theft and in some areas vehicle theft. It's just stuff, I'm much more worried and concerned about violent crimes like murder, rape and robbery. Which if you'll review the link you posted, you'll see Irmo had no murders, 5 rapes and 12 robberies in 2005. I'll take that any day over a city with a lower overall crime index but a higher incidence of violent crimes. Also remember all the crime statistics are driven by reported crimes, which places the burden on the residents to report and the officers to report accurately.

Here you go - link to the crime blotters from the State Newspaper - if these kinds of minor infractions are included in the stats - you can see you have nothing to worry about.
