So I spoke with our insurance company yesterday about our car insurance & they let me know that since we are moving from NC to SC our insurance is going to more than double!! We have USAA and they usually have the best rates so not sure if anyone will have any better rates. So, just to give you an idea, we have 2 vehicles. 1 is a 2000 and the other is a 2007 model. Nothing flashy. Our insurance is going from $342/yr to $777/yr. I was wondering if anyone knows of where I should begin to call around and get other quotes. Also, do you think this is high or is it good or average for SC?!?! Thanks!!!

You should always call around and shop your business. I would start with an independent agent that can quote from many different companies. Keep in mind that if you bundle your insurance you can often save a lot of money. IIRC you will still own a home (homeowner's insurance), you will rent an apartment (renter's insurance, please don't do without this), and have 2 cars (auto insurance) to insure. If you have low claims history and offer them all in a package you might get some good rates.

On a side note, I was told South Carolina has high auto insurance rates because of the number of uninsured drivers on the road. I believe the estimate is that 1 out of 4 cars on the road have no insurance. Be careful out there.

Sempter, can't say because you didn't mention the zip code of the area you are moving from in NC to the one you are going to in SC. We also don't know your age, family status etc.

Compared to cities in the northeast, auto-insurance is really cheap in SC.

Like others said, shop around and see what you can get.

GPS, I agree with insurance being cheaper than the Northeast. Raised my coverage and still saved hundreds here.

Semper,
South Carolina has the second worst drunk driving in the country.
That is why your insurance is sooo high.
Shame, really, it's not like we are that populated compared to other areas,
but there sure are alot of fatal car accidents down here.

Or our cops are a lot more active in terms of looking for speeders and drunk drivers. The only other state I've seen that's comparable to ours in terms of cops is VA.

OP: That seems high. I carry the max insurance since I have clients that ride with me and I don't think it's that much. You may want to shop it.

.
we came from WI which depending on report viewed was # 1 in that tragic listing... and our car insurance is higher here then back home.
worst thing is having a history of zero tix and still getting rate increases every 6 months...

I plan to shop around very soon. Things have been very hectic with moving and Holidays etc. I have no tickets or accidents either so having such high insurance is absurd. Hopefully, I will get a little relief after shopping around.

Well we called USAA and our rates only went up $17.00, the agent told us that depends on which part of Columbia you move to the rates can be higher, which makes no sence since we owned a 2006 BMW.
