It's a hard thing to do, that's why it isn't done more often.
But to be fair, Columbia's historic architecture was done at a time when everyone else was doing the same also. There's a lot of good, solid contemporary architecture out there that will last for a long time. I agree we should preserve as much as possible but don't knock the new stuff either.

The Vista and Five Points each need their own thread, and I don't know whether Elmwood and Gadsden is considered the Vista (Technically it is.), but the All South Federal Credit Union branch at that site will be three floors and will sit at the corner in good urban fashion. Surface parking will be behind it and will include a tree canopy.

The gap that will be used for public art in the wall looks like a nock-off of the Merrill Lynch bull.

It took long enough and the Vista desperately needs more hotel rooms.

Default Looks Good/ good Infill Development

This should lead to some filled commericial vacancies, spaces left open when Rocky Roast and Z Pizza left will be looking a lot more desirable to potential businesses now.

Also construction has finally begun on the 5 pts WaffleHouse, also an infill development being built on currently vacant land.

Last night the lease sign was out of the window where Z Pizza was and the lights were all on. That's all I know.

According to The State, COLA's opens next week. It will be the family's first new restaurant in 20 years. They have been very successful in Columbia, Charleston and Savannah and plan for COLA's to be around a long time. The photo gallery that accompanies the attached article is exciting.
