Plans stall for 15-story student housing tower near Richland Library
Columbia student housing tower for USC students on hold | The State
. Bad news after another. Again can i complain now that this seems to happen way too much in Columbia. It's getting ridiculous frankly it's making me disappointed of communication. Downtown would of been coming even more then it is now if these project didn't get delayed scaled back or some cancelled.
Projects being scaled back or canceled or postponed is fairly common in many places and Columbia is no exception. I have lived in other cities that promised even more. Honestly, I thought far fewer developments would actually materialize than did, especially the Hub. If I remember correctly, this project didn't get the tax break like the others.
I think focusing on anything but housing in the areas that aren't currently commercial, i.e., the central business district, the Vista from Huger to Assembly, and Five Points and Devine Street, is spreading development too thin. Build places for people to live and businesses will follow where it makes sense.
I agree... I would really like to see a 50% discount for 10 years for market rate apartments in very specified, high traffic areas, even specific lots. There is plenty of room for developments that could feed walkable retail, and those who occupy such units would more than likely be high earners, which would entice retail.
So sounds like someone at the state is a hater of development in the city or loves stirring up stuff.
What are you guys talking about? He was correct. The article was written in 2010 and said it could remain vacant for years, which it did...until the Hub opened in 2015.
I have no love for The State's coverage of Columbia, but even a broken clock is right twice a day.
I could never be disappointed that a 15-story building fell through on that site, let alone for student housing.
How about the fact that the Major, once again either in the pocket of or bamboozled by developers, led the cheering for the demolition of some of the last remaining storefronts of the black business district.

For surface parking.
I was sadden by that building being torn down I wish it would of been integrated into that new building.
I would have like to have seen it moved closer to the Vista. Maybe incorporated as infill? but it's too late for dreams now. So, The Edge is stalled... Kline is slashed....those were two awesome developments for Columbia... and stilll not much at BullStreet. What happened?
Columbia always has plodded along. I think it always will. That's not to say other cities don't have delayed and failed developments.
"Plodded along"? The past two or three years have seen a pretty substantial development boom for intown Columbia. I would have never seen it coming before that. Just because two projects are on hold doesn't mean the sky is falling.
