It's great to see Columbia doing its thing. I think it's great. Every city has some homeless people. I've been begged in downtown Greenville on more than one occasion.

As I was driving to Lexington last night & drove down Gervais St. I would think that Columbia would have a much better shot, in moving forward with that area then Main St. Coming from the Gervais St bridge back towards town has more potential then Main St seems to have. You got the river walk right there & you can walk across the bridge into town. You also have that little amphitheater down there too, which is awesome. Going away from town you then have west Columbia with those shops just on the other side of the bridge. The only down side I can see is that the road is four lane & some people tend to speed down that road. Some really nice resturants as well in that area. Edventure is there & so is the museum.
Overall Gervais St has much more going for it not to mention more area to do it in.

The city and the private sector are doing both, and more. It doesn't have to be one or the other, or just two things. Construction on the Canal Front plaza and park adjacent to EdVenture is progressing nicely. They will tie into Riverfront Park. Columbia's big.

The 12-page spread is in hard copy only so far, but here's an article and some links to photos and tours. The google-map tour is old.

i'm still too new here to the area to form solid opinions if a certain spot is doing well or not enough, but i'd say anything new is a big positive. And the Mast store, the new steakhouse, etc should hopefully get the ball rolling and get other investors to take the plunge

I think you're playing the "opposing viewpoints not tolerated" game.

I heard rumors years ago that they wanted to tie the river walk areas together. They were hoping to connect it to the damn in Lexington all the way to Gervais St. I think that would be sweet but a long time coming.

I don't attempt to refute facts, but if I disagree with an opinion that is stated as fact, why should I sit silent on a discussion board?

A Charleston company has bought the McCrory's building that sits catty-corner from Mast General. They want in on the action. They're going to spend a lot of money making it enticing at ground level. The new owners of Hennessey's restaurant have applied to construct a balcony that will cover sidewalk dining. The new facade will be reminiscent of something you'd see in New Orleans.
