Here's the online version of what Main Street has to offer: history, architecture, bars, retail, restaurants, art, and power, yes, power. The picture you're referring to, GSP101, is of the Arcade Mall. A dozen artists, a hair salon, and retail are in there. It is L-shaped with an entrance off of Main and one off of Washington. It wraps around the Barringer building. Main Street Columbia is there, folks, with plenty as it is to be enjoyed or ignored, with lots more to come. The choice is South Carolina's.

BTW, I didn't realize Granger-Owings was local retail. Wow!

Here is a photo; there are some shops, an alterations place, some offices and a couple of restaurants. It is my favorite building in Columbia and its located on Main between Lady and Washington between the Barringer and Meridian buildings.

Thanks, that is awesome space. I did not realize that the Barringer building was apartments and the first highrise in SC, it has good a good presence among the newer buildings on Main. How many floors is The Barringer?

Now, the big project is to connect Main with The Vista and reduce through lanes on Assembly. Assembly has the potential to be a great street, just needs a little work.

Any news on what is going into the old Capitol Restaurant Building? That is a great building as well.

Barringer is 12 stories, no news on Capitol Restaurant (Brennan) Building yet. The City Center CEO said a couple of weeks ago in an article that he expects an announcement on it soon. Assembly could be the deal.

Taking out parking lanes on Assembly isn't really going to make it more appealing for those on foot. Travel lanes need to be taken out to actually make the trek less intimidating.

Not with the median widened. Only slow walkers have a problem now anyway. It gives you 27 seconds to cross and there is already a pretty wide median in the middle. It's the psychology of it that is the problem, and that will change when the intimidating appearance changes, as the defensive line shifts from Main to Assembly.

Through lanes do need to be reduced which would create a wider median for trees/lighting and wider sidewalks. As Columbia and the university develop towards the river, Assembly has to be addressed. In addition to Main/Gervais, with the new School of Business and Law School (assuming the current location is maintained), there will be increased pedestrian traffic on that street. It is not viable in the current form. Between the school of business and law school, that could be in excess of $175-200m in development, leaving the street as it is, simply will not work.

Greenville is scheduled to start phase I work on Beattie/College Street this year. If things pan out, it could be a good case study.
