How the heck is the Olympia area not annexed to the city of Columbia? The city limits are awfully screwy. When the Bull street development takes place, that will certainly be a part of the city of Columbia, correct? That should bring some numbers, unless people uproot from other places within the city to move there.
Whats the story on the other incorporated places such as Dentsville, Forest Acres, Arcadia Lakes, etc... Whats the roadblock in getting these places annexed? Forest Acres would be an awfully attractive place to add in to the city of Columbia concerning tax base, wouldnt it? Just thinking aloud here... ha

Forest Acres has been approached in the past. They don't want to be part of Columbia and that's their right.

Maybe Mayor Steve felt that it was best to annex them in and clean them up as opposed to leaving them as islands of dispair in the County surrounded by the City.
Interestingly enough.. I believe the City and the County signed some form of agreement that would allow the City Police to go into the County and make arrest. Sheriff Deputies have always been allowed to go into the City and make arrest but not the other way around which is surprising. The new rule may help reduce crime in some of the border areas or doughnut holes that are in the County and surrounded by the City and full of crime

They would have both been annexed before they were ever built if it hadn't been for the pull of one woman who lives in the area who was adamantly opposed to both developments. City council caved, although Mayor Coble voted to annex with a catch of some sort that I can't recall. He was outnumbered.

Why would you move to New York if Charleston becomes the state's largest city (again)?
Yeah, the argument was pretty much that the city was cherry-picking when it came to annexation and that you've got to take the bad with the good when it comes to this.
It makes sense. The city is in the county, so county sheriff deputies have jurisdiction in the city. However, city police are restricted to the city in the absence of an agreement that states otherwise.

Because I'm eccentric and can't help it. My partner understands and goes along. I just won't live in the second largest city in South Carolina. That's just not going to happen.

Forest Acres and Arcadia Lakes are already incorporated. They are towns or cities or whatever they call themselves. Olympia and Dentsville are unincorporated parts of Richland County.

I'm not joking. I'm not dependent on a job for income, so I would just change locations.
