True story: If this was in Greenville or Charleston, it would be a done deal already: Amazon abruptly freezes hiring - Local / Metro - TheState.com (http://www.thestate.com/2011/04/14/1778040/amazon-abruptly-freezes-hiring.html#disqus_thread - broken link) What in the world are the Columbia politicians thinking/doing?

What idiots like Nikki Haley seem to be missing is if we don't get the Amazon center here we lose the jobs and income yet Amazon will continue to sell to SC residents tax free. Uhhh...so what's the problem exactly with saying yes to this deal?

In reading the comments of The State story, one of the people who commented posted this link (below). Wow. Amazon sounds like a horrible corporate citizen. Not exactly the type of company that will help with community charities. Amazon will be a bunch of low wage jobs, but apparently not much more.

Shop local. Stay away from chains. Shop online only locally, if you can't walk, drive or take public transportation to trade in person.

Not sure how this project has anything to do with Greenville or Charleston. While it is true that Nikki is from Lexington, she was elected statewide and received a tremendous amount of support from the upstate. Additionally, the incentives have to be approved by the state legislature which includes Greenville and Charleston. So, I doubt that if this were in another location, it would be done.

While it is true that these positions will not be high paying HQ or Finance jobs, they will average $15 per hour or about $31.5k per year. Since you are from Greenville, that equates to about 97.5% of your home metro's per capita income level, assuming is does not decline again.

Isn't this a state gov't hang-up?

If anything, it's in-state retailers away from Lexington/Columbia who'd be hurt most by a sales tax break, as they'd still be competing with tax-free amazon purchases, but would see zero positive impact in the local economy.

The deal would be a much-needed shot in the arm for Columbia.
