My sisters husband is getting stationed in Sumter. They will be moving there the end of June. I was wondering where some low crime neighborhoods are, but cheapish rent. The military will pay $900 for their rent each month, so homes around that price range. I just don't want them living in a bad area and none of us have ever been to South Carolina before so we're clueless when it comes to the crime rate. Also maybe there are good areas in Columbia near Sumter for cheap? I would consider those as well. Just looking for information about the area. Anything will be helpful, like maybe good places to eat, shop, etc. And maybe your opinions on the area and community. Thanks for your help in advance!

Sumter is what you make it. There are plenty of good neighborhoods to choose from. Stay on the west side of Alice Drive and you can't go wrong. $900 could possibly get you a home there. Look at the neighborhood around Phelps St. Older, smaller homes. Most homes there are around 1300 to 1600 sq ft. You'll know if you are in a bad area. Steer clear of those areas. Crime can be high on the eastern side of town. Columbia is about 35 minutes west of Shaw but for the money, you are better off in Sumter. Expect to pay nearly double in Columbia. While there is more to do there, it's not worth the higher cost of living when if you really need to go there, it's just a quick drive. Good luck and Welcome!

I myself live right behind the base in the autumn terrace area, i work on base as a civilian worker and my commute is maybe 5 minutes maybe 4. I've noticed a few houses near my street (doctors crt) are empty and i assume because we have all military and retired, some people are getting stationed else where. I would say try it out! I love my neighborhood, and could honestly sleep with the door open and windows! Type of area you see people jogging all the time, kids playing, and people walking their dogs! I've also lived here 26 years and sumter is definately what you make of it, this is my home and i have never left. Best thing your within great driving distance of everything. Mrtyle Beach, Charleston, Charlotte, Florence, Columbia! It's great if you take the time to get to know it!
