Default Safe neighborhoods?

I might be staying for 8 weeks in Columbia, SC. What are the safe areas?

Here is a link to a crime map that shows the safest areas of the city as well as the least safe. You can look at types of crime by area, number of crimes, etc.

Moderator cut: link removed, linking to competitor sites is not allowed

Hope it helps.

Wow.. this map shows Ft. Jackson as one of the 'least safe' neighborhoods.. I wonder if that is because of the potential the site would be targeted by terrorists

lol.. this map makes Columbia look like Detroit. It may be helpful for the OP to share what they are looking for in terms of housing and what other amenities they would like nearby so that others may be able to offer ideas.

If an area looks safe it most likely is.

It also shows Shandon as being comparable to Eau Claire, which to anyone who is truly familiar with the area or lives here is laughable. That's probably why the original poster was asking for the opinion of people who actually know the neighborhoods.

Like Woodlands said, it would probably be helpful to know if you're interested in living downtown or the suburbs, if you would prefer to be close to a job, etc. There are a lot of nice affordable areas of the city, but the biggest problem might be trying to find a two month lease.

It depends on how strong each neighborhood association is and on who lives in each. People have been highly encouraged to call the cops if they even suspect something isn't quite right. Such calls often lead to arrests that might not occur otherwise.

If I read this correctly, it's a temp visit. So that would place you most likely in some form of a hotel or extended stay suite for a location. So where those happen to be could be the main points to focus on. Also, is this stay for work, for family, etc as that may dictate which areas to consider first.

And that's true for the area outside the base. Lot of rentals and low income housing within a mile or two of the base.
