The city donated space in many of its parks and the people jumped on the opportunity to grow their own. There's a waiting list now to get a garden. The city is now looking into expanding the program. With City Roots, the farmer's market on Whaley Street, other open-air markets around town, and the fruit tree orchard Columbia won, people are not only saving money but also getting to know each other.
