My spouse and I are in town visiting family and have been offered the chance to go out for dinner alone (!) this evening. Woohoo! Any recommendations for date night? Priorities are delicious food cooked well - we are fine with virtually any type of food - and a relaxing environment. Price is not particularly important, although we didn't bring any fancy clothes so wherever we go will need to be jeans-friendly. We'd be very grateful for any recommendations.

Assuming you are downtown my first choice would be The Blue Marlin, second would be Al's Upstairs, third would be Dianne's on Devine.

Enjoy your evening.

If you're not downtown and can manage business casual dress, Solstice Kitchen in the northeast is excellent, as is Terra in West Columbia. I would make reservations at either.

Chain-wise, Columbia also has a Ruth's Chris (downtown) and a Melting Pot (northwest/Bush River Road).

I would check out Liberty Taproom in the Vista. They have pretty good food and a nice atmosphere. On Main Street there is a newer restaurant called "The Cowboy." It's a Brazilian steakhouse where the servers cut the meat for you, right at your table. It's $30 a plate, but you get as much as you want, and there are so many different choices of meat (filet minion, flank steak, seven pepper sirloin, filet mignon wrapped with bacon, duck etc.)

Try Motor Supply Company Bistro, Gervais & Vine, Saki Tumi or M Vista in the Vista area or Al Amir or Baan Sawan on Devine Street/Five Points area or Villa Tronco downtown. That should give you a good range of cuisines to choose from.

My .02:

I would recommend Garibaldi's in 5 points (try the Flounder or the Grits fries and/or scallop app). I've always had a great meal there.

I'm not a big fan of Al's upstairs or Dianne's. I've been a couple of times over the years and never really thought much of either of those establishments. Dianne's was surprisingly pricey.

Terra is good (try the pimento cheeseburger). Chef Mike does a nice job there.

I had always heard good things about Motor Supply but I cannot recommend them as my one time eating there was less than pleasant. My business partner had dinner there and felt it was okay at best.

I had a bad steak at Liberty tap room. I had a good meal at Solstice, it is quite a drive from downtown.

I had a decent meal at Mr.Friendly's in 5 points. It's fairly laid back and they have a large wine selection. For Asian type food Pho-Viet in 5 points or Miyo's on Lady street can be good.

Blue Marlin was nothing special.

We eat out 5 days a week. These recommendations are based on my personal experiences and your mileage may vary. Taste is a subjective thing

Good recommendations, but I think they mentioned wanting to wear jeans and that would be underdressed at Garibaldi's or Solstice.

Lol, the ultimate greasy spoon. Jeans would be a definite no no at Ruth's Chris, but certainly Longhorn's would be an option or Liberty Tap Room. Motor Supply usually has a good steak with some sort of fluorish as does Mr. Friendly's. I think jeans are ok at either place.
