As for good restaurants and areas, maybe tell us a bit about what you like: In-town or suburbs? New construction or older homes? Types of food you like?
CBC had some good questions above - it helps to know a little bit more about your likes.
Some of my favorite places in Columbia are the Horseshoe at USC, the view from Top of Carolina at Capstone House, the in-town neighborhoods like Shandon, Melrose Heights, Elmwood Park, Earlewood Park, Cottontown, University Hill, Wales Garden, etc., Riverfront Park, Memorial Park, Finlay Park, the State House, the Arcade Mall, Nickelodeon Theater, Trustus Theatre, clubbing in the Vista, the fountains in Five Points, the shops on Devine Street, the Museum of Art, Riverbanks Zoo, the Lake Murray Dam, the Saluda River Rapids and Congaree National Park.
The State Museum/EdVenture Children's Museum parking lot is packed to the gills today. When the plaza and park on the Columbia Canal adjacent to the museums are completed next year, museum patrons will spill out onto the decks and walkways overlooking the canal and Congaree River.

I read the column, but I'm a little confused. Does the writer live in Columbia? Is he saying it's a great place to visit but he wishes he didn't live there?

He lives in Columbia. It's a response to the mantra that what Columbia has going for it is it's only two hours from the mountains and beaches (and only two hours from Charleston and Greenville).
