Irmo is closer to downtown and shopping, etc. and Chapin is much more rural.
that's it in a nutshell. Chapin is a smaller 'burb with more rural neighborhoods falling under it's area (i'm sure partly due to how the lake is spread out). Irmo to us seems harder to notice where it stops and starts. You flow into it and thru it, doesnt appear to be a stand alone township or city. I would guess that Irmo's school district is larger then Chapin's

Chapin is more of a "traditional" town while Irmo is more of a suburb or bedroom community for Columbia.. It has no traditional downtown to speak of. Irmo may also be larger than Chapin and what is considered to be in Irmo extends beyond the towns actual limits.
Irmo is likely more diverse than Chapin reflecting the demographics of the Midlands as a whole. Irmo has been working to become more of a traditional town with its world renown Okra Strut.. You havent seen anything until you see an Okra actually Strut
