Does anyone know of any builders or communities that have green homes? I am interested in solar energy.

Thanks.

Wellesley Place in West Columbia (Shumaker and Holliday are the builders) but no solar energy that I'm aware of.

Thank you for the information. I am surprised that I haven't been able to find anything on builders who do offer this option.

I've never heard of a single person using solar power around here.

A tremendous resource for finding licensed solar contractors......keep in mind The contractor HAS to be licensed to do the work performed to be eligible for the Federal, and if applicable State rebates.

Think about starting small, $7-8k for a domestic hot water system, usually includes 2 panels, control center, pumps, one 80 gal storage tank with electric back up for not so sunny days.

There are a lot of variables to even a 'simple' installation. There are panels to be installed on the roof, with that brings the potential for leaks and the roof must be able to handle the additional weight. Some towns even require a structural engineer to approve the installation of the panels.
You will need a licensed plumber in most states to do the final 'tie in'.
you will need an electrical outlet need the control pannel.
Even the choice of insulation for the pipes exposed to the elements is very important.

Always do your homework on the contractor, ask to see prior jobs.

I have found that people who have even the basic systems installed are willing to talk to potential customers. The "Green" community are my best cheerleaders.

Even when the contractor is licensed to install Solar domestic hot water systems anytime your plumbing is touched you should have a licensed plumber do the final 'tie in'.
You would not want a check valve to be installed incorrectly and have glycol<an antifreeze> introduced to your potable water.
