I work in Lexington, on 378. There is a coffee shop directly across the street called Three Bean Net Cafe. And a sub placed called Larry's Giant Subs is almost next door to the coffee shop. A quick stop at www.dunkindonuts.com tells me that there is a Dunkin Donuts on Broad River Rd in Columbia and one on Forest Drive in Columbia.

mpaquette,
Thank you for that tip! I just emailed this couple that live in Lexington this information. I know they'll be in their glory over hearing this. I saw them up here in May and they still hadn't found a coffee shop, so it will be a hoot when they see this email I just sent, with your tips on where one is right in Lexington! They'll get a kick out of getting the scoop from up north too, I can't wait for them to open that email! I'll certainly make sure I tell them it came from some one in their neck of the woods, you can be assured!
Thanks again, that was great!

City Girls 52 Will be Fine Here!!!
This blog is not going to be in paragraph form nor answer questions or comments like an educated essay style. So, I am going to just throw this out as i read this posting. Everything you said was true, here. Lexington zipcode is great to live. There ARE basement homes here, you just have to know where to look. Some condos, apartments, and homes have them. Though the price of homes are MUCH cheaper than the North, the wages suck unless you work for the government, are a professional, or your field is in demand. My family took on a tornado the first summer here followed by the BIG one...Hurricane HUGO! WE SURVIVED well, though we had no electricity for air conditioning or to bath nor phone service nor tv. It doesn't bother us. Dunkin Donuts, you say...try Broad River Road off Bush River Road in 29210 near the small Dutch Square Centre Mall in a place called Boozer Shopping Center. Coffee lovers like Starbucks around here. This place is constantly growing! That's what's so great about it. BUT I love the malls in the North...2-3 story and huge. Our only 2 story one has a curfew for teens with gun shooting issues. We're trying to deal with 3-4 gangs FINALLY! The drought is something different for us, though not as bad as Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi. There are indoor pools at the fairly new "Y"'s and weight loss clubs to cool off. There is a book store chain, Barnes and Noble, with a cafe with coffee that lets people come in to relax and enjoy the atmosphere of reclining to look at books and magazines. If one lives in the Columbia area they are 1/2 way to the mountains to cool off and the same for the beach areas. Though I MISS terribly the REAL beaches on the New Jersey and New York shores as there's NOTHING like them ANYWHERE!!! NOT HERE! I HATE crawl spaces and what's under them....EW! This is considered the NEW Florida for retirees, too, who came to Ft. Jackson wanting to come back to retire. At least all our beautiful lakes aren't filled with alligators and snakes! We've raised our family here which is home for us. If you want to find good neighbors and friendly people with a Bible base, this IS it. The only problem is some racial tension from the media that doesn't belong here. We all get along for the greater good of the community and worship together. It's others that want to separate from those not like them that is too sad. The worse part, despite our hospitals and teaching ones with the University's medical school, we have the HIGHEST rate in the country for strokes, heart attacks, domestic violence, high blood presure, diabetes, etc. There is so many poverty pockets in some counties that should be assisted to bring them up to a Lexington #1 or Lexington #5, or a Richland #2 school district. Stay away from Richland #1 schools EXCEPT Hand Middle School, the rebuilt Dreher High School, and Rosewood or A.C. Moore Elementary schools. The others ARE not great ...including Forest Acres. Hope this helps. maybe you'll join us, too, but I would suggest a small home, even a mobile or modular, for the summers up there in the North.

They don't have kids though, so I can't comment on the schools or anything like that. They're in zip code 29072, so look through there for some places to live. I can't believe there home they found there! It's SO nice for the $$ compared to the northeast prices that we're all seeing up in this neck of the woods in New England! These friends of mine aren't too far from Lake Murray and when I was there helping them move, we took a drive to Irmo's shopping Mall. WHAT a nice mall it was too. I think it was called the Columbiana Center Mall in Irmo. It had every single store imaginable all along this road, you name it and it was here! I thought it was absolutely awesome, I was in my glory here! I couldn't believe all those stores they had, and to this day, I don't think I was ever in such a huge complex as that and trust me, we have our malls in New England, but NOT like this one!
The weather has been pretty hot for them in the last several weeks in Lexington, really really hot and from what they're saying, it's a drought too, which they haven't had in a long time! They loved being down there in the last year through the winter months though, they keep saying they don't miss our New England weather at ALL (so far!). They're really enjoying it all as much as they can in that part of the country. With them, they don't realize that it's been just as hot in New England these days for us too. When I talk to them today, they'll find out! Like today? It's close to 100 degree's in the shade, and here we are, at the end of August. With them, they told us it's so hot that they can't even go in their community pool. SO hot that you have to stay in air conditioned buildings. Well, guess what? It's SO hot in New England right now that we're all in air conditioned buildings too all day long, so they're not alone!
On the down side? Here's some things they told us....One thing that her husband misses like crazy? Believe it or not it's coffee shops! They don't have one single solitary Dunkin Donuts or anything like that there, ANYWHERE down there. He scouted the place out good for months and looked everywhere for one. He misses them like you wouldn't believe too! They drove up in the middle of May and the first place he hit was our coffee shop in town, he couldn't wait! It's things like that, that he's not that crazy about! Sub/Sandwich shops? Forget about it, they're no where to be found. Hey, they're losing weight, but at least they look and feel better! It's a GOOD, positive thing for them both! When we saw them, we all thought the sun and new life style was doing them a world of good!
Since they moved there they had one thing happen to them while they were living there and guess what it was? It was a tornado watch. They were freaking out over it too, but there neighbors were wonderful and telling them what to do and there town people were all great in explaining it all with the sounds in town and on the radio and TV. Well, through it all they said they didn't like the fact that they didn't have a basement to run to. A ton of homes in the south don't have basements built under their foundations like up in the north part of the country, with them they have crawl spaces and that's about it for under your foundation. So neither of them were too thrilled when they had the tornado watch signal going off and they didn't have that basement to run down to during it. They got over that though quick and that was the end of their hair raising incident for the two of them!
If they make it through another year there then they'll be staying there regardless! Since moving there? They've been able to check out SO many beautiful areas of our country and that's the part that they really enjoy, which is the bottom line for them.

bkje18,
I am not a teacher and I totally agree with what you said about the teaching of "select" students. In Lexington 1 I see that it is the kids who's parents either went to school with the teachers or the teachers taught their parents that are "select". They seem to get special treatment while others are pushed behind.
There are schools far better than Lexington1.
As far as coffee shops go in Lexington let me see. There is The Wired Bean in the Old Mill right off Main street,Java Jives on Hwy 6,Three Bean beside Publix,Starbucks inside Target, There is a little coffee place across from Franks Carwash it isn't really a shop you drive up and get coffe Mountain Mudd or something like that, there is another one closer to the new Target as well in another shopping center and out on HWY 1 close to the high school there is Daylight Doughnuts and they have espresso, etc as well.

I have to ask:
Excusing my ignorance please. My child has entered school in lex 1 and they 'tested' ???? Why? For what? he's only in kindergarden.
Can someone please explain this process to me as I see here someone has had experience with 'this'. Also, they tested my child withOUT his prescription glasses on! Yes, they were made very aware that my child needs them and he wears them ALL of the time. Can't see a thing without them. How should I handle this, any imput would greatly be appreciated.
Footnote: ALL info would be a great help.
Thanks to all.

Yes I'd like more input on this "school" topic as well. I'm not fully understanding what is being implied with the kids in public schools.
