Actually, The record alligator in SC is 19 foot. I personally, can speak for seeing MANY 15+ footers with my own eyes. Most alligators are in Charleston and the Santee area. However, there is always a chance of migration with alligators. The reason there are so many alligators in Santee is because the lake connects directly to Charleston and they swim to Santee.

The swamps around Sumter are loaded with Gators. I think they got rid of them but there used to be gators in Swan Lake/Iris Gardens. I remember walking up on one as a kid when I used to blaze those trails around the pond. Second Mill Pond has several and it isn't uncommon for them to sunbathe in people's yards who live on it.

Talking Gators in Columbia SC

YES there are gators in the Conagree and they are multiplying rapidly. We walked across the foot bridge In Columbia's riverfront park. it's beautiful there but there are gators. My family(natives of SC) told me I was seeing things then I saw a baby gator going into the water. We stood on a observation platform and a drunk guy desperate to swim in the river waded In and from up high we saw one gator began to stalk him then a second and a third. We yelled gators because the large one began swimming towards him. People love to go out on the rocks with their kids but they don't realize the gators are plentiful and will stalk you, even in the streams that run through the park. I checked with the docent and she confirmed there are about eighty or more gators. #seenthemformyself.

Default What areas are you familiar with as a previous DNR employee?

Do you happen to be familiar with Lake Jocassee? I've seen posts where people are saying that they've seen Gators there, but I don't know how credible said posts are. I would rather hear it from someone that works or used to work with the SCDNR.

I asked a friend of mine who's retired from SCDNR your question and he said: "Never heard of any... doesn't mean you couldn't have a wanderer show up."
