Default Commute from Charlotte to Columbia??

I don't know much about the Carolinas, but my husband is in the Army and he is looking into working at Fort Jackson in Columbia, SC. I work for a large law firm with an office in Charlotte, NC. If we lived in say, Rock Hill, would it be reasonable for me to commute to Charlotte and he to Columbia? Thanks!!

Commuting from Rock Hill to Charlotte is very common; I do it myself. But his commute to Columbia will definitely be longer. However, it's not that uncommon for people to make a commute like that. Depending on where you choose to live in Rock Hill, the commute could be anywhere from 50 minutes to 1hr 20 minutes (that also depends on how fast he drives, LOL).

I'm no expert on that drive during morning/afternoon "rush" hours but I travel to Concord a lot and have never had any traffic issues in that stretch of 77 between Columbia and Rock Hill. And to me 50 minutes seems "reasonable" considering it could take that long to get to work locally if you lived in certain areas of Charlotte metro, or the RDU/RTP area. I even looked at a job on the South end of Sumter, which is just across town, and even that took 40 minutes.

If you are in Charlotte closer to the SC side than the far side it will be easier. Depending on days you work you may want to split the commute and live in say Great Falls or somewhere in between. Columbia has many types of law firms. Is it possible that you could look into changing companies? I would think that would be easier than the commute. Ultimately, the question is will your husband be happy with an hour commute to work?

That is a good point about the number of law firms in Columbia. With a major law school and state government here, there is an abundance of law firms in Columbia.

Buy a condo in CLT and a house outside of Columbia. See one another on weekends.
