Are there gangs in Lexington and in the schools?
I called the city police to ask if there was gang activity in Lexington and in the schools. He said there was some activity in Lexington and said he would have someone call me that deals with that. So while I wait for his call, I want to know how bad is it and are they handling it.
Is there much gang activity in the schools, even middle schools. Is it threats or violence?
Thanks!

Next time you talk to police can you tell them to update their crime statistics on their website. Guessing (least I hope) they have more recent stats available then 2009, maybe its just an oversight they haven't updated their webpage yet

I would really appreciate some responses on the subject. Most everyone sings praises about the Lexington 1 schools, so I am assuming there must not be much of a problem. The guy that was supposed to get back to me from the city police has not as of yet.
But there is some gang activity according the guy I talked to yesterday, I would appreciate some input on this. We come from an area that does not have any gangs in the schools or community. Do you feel this is an issue in Lexington??
Thank you!

Gangs are pretty much a non-issue. There are a few kids that are wannabes and try to rep colors, but they are pretenders.

I went to school in Irmo and have several friends that went to school in Lexington. In Irmo you certainly have some "wannabes", but it's just a facade. Gangs in Lexington is almost laughable to me. I have no stats or experiences in Lexington in terms of attending the schools there but I have a feeling my friends would give me a blank stare if I asked them about gangs in the Lexington school system. Hope this helps a little bit.
All in all, Irmo would have more gang activity than in Lexington. Even then, Irmo's gang problem is minimal, but principles of schools and officials inside the school systems in Irmo remain vigilant to my knowledge and experience.

They have had some small activity due to the number of students moving to Lexington from the city and trying to bring their thug life with them. Fortunately these students have never found traction in the Lexington demographics and quickly have identified and marginalized. There are also some "wannabees" in the system but their rap is much worse than their rep.
Non issue.

Thanks, from what I have been reading I assumed that the Lexington 1 district would do what needed to be done to keep it under control. I know that all schools have issues with problem students, it's how they handle them that defines the school and the safety of the students. It was the word gang that threw me, but if they are keeping a handle on it, then that is good.
I have a feeling that Lexington students are used to seeing many new students moving into the district all the time. My children won't be alone in that, and will hopefully find good friends that share common ground.

I am a teacher in Lexington 1. I have to agree that gangs here seems laughable. Definitely not a problem! This is a great and SAFE school district!
