Contigent on getting a pharmacy job of course, we are considering moving to the Columbia area. What is to expect? We currently live in Pittsburgh. Looking for safe, clean area with shopping, dining, and culture things. Our price range for renting is up to 1,000K a month. Any thoughts, sugguestions, opinions would help. What are the good and bad things about Columbia?
What you'll notice first, is a much slower way of life compared to Pittsburgh. Lots of Steeler's fans around here though. Lots of other recent posts in here regarding a place to live. Check them out.
P.S. What's with the new uniforms? My wife says they look like a swarm of Bumblebee's on the field. :-)

I'd look at the Shandon/Wales Garden/Heathwood area - lots of shopping and convenient to restaurants and nightlife. You could rent a house or apartment in that price range.
Of course, the pharmacy location should play a big part in your decision. If you can narrow that down, the regulars can give you some great recs that could minimize your commute. As easy as the traffic can be in some areas of Columbia, there's no point in having to navigate more congestion than necessary.
You'll find a ton of Pittsburgh people down here. Any idea where you'd be working? Maybe with your budget Rosewood is a good option, or Carolina Walk if if you prefer a condo.
The traffic here is sissy traffic compared to many major cities. Granted it would be nice to be close to work but also if within 10-15 miles here is usually less then a half hour commute.
I expect there will be many nice apartments for less then $1K per month.
only point i'd add, speaking from our experiences when we moved here from WI in 09 and my sister down here last year: when looking for a place to rent, whether it's a home or an appt, be wary of what you see online. Places can look great in pix, but once you see them in person you could be unpleasantly surprised. Especially when considering apt complexes; my sis looked at a few that seemed reasonable and in good locations, but further research showed they were not the best place to reside.
Guess my point/suggestion: if at all possible, try not to book that apt sight unseen before you even come down. In an ideal world, give yourself even a couple days to tour and see places you have on your list in person. The gang on this site can give good feedback, and sites like apartment guide can give some solid reviews as well. But nothing like checking them in person to avoid heartache later.
One quick way to check out rental apartments is to obeserve the cars in the parking lots. Are they newer, cleaner, parked properly, etc. versus junkers, dirty, dented, parked all over, flashed out, etc.
The type/condition of cars will give a quick feel for the type person living there.
