I'm a New Jersey native, but I've lived in Columbia long time. You won't be alone, there are tons of NY, NJ, Pa. natives in Columbia.

Hi - where are you going to be moving to?
My husband and I are moving to SC next yr. We are from NJ.
We just came back from our first visit to Columbia (and Greenville). I can't tell you how many people we met in the Columbia & Greenville area that were originally from the NJ/NY area, and they love living there.
I have talked to realtors on the phone, that live down in SC, and they have NY accents. It's so funny. And it's always the same story "Oh, I moved down here 8 years ago and would never move back north!" ... Especially when I tell them HOW darned expensive it is to live here now! haha.

When we do move there, one of the things we will be doing is looking for locals to meet. I know Greenville had a 'welcome wagon' committee. I got a flyer in the mail on it. It is for the new people in the area, and they meet once a week, and do activities. Like bowling or going to a baseball game, coffee house, or wherever. I thought that was a good idea, especially for "relocators" that don't know anyone. I am sure Columbia and the suburbs has something similar.
Once we move next yr, I will be definetely be posting here looking for people in my situation as well

Sfill
We will be moving to Columbia, Northeast in Lake Carolina. I can't wait to go because my husband has family there in northeast Columbia. I hope to meet lots of people from NY/NJ area. I remember visiting years ago and we were referred to us as the Yankees.

It definitely is too expensive to live here in NJ. I love NJ and will miss it I guess because its been my home my entire life. But change is good I guess......thanks for the response waccamatt and sfill. So sfill where is it that you will be moving?

Jersey, most people who refer to you as yankees are just playing with you. There is the occasional rural separatist that might not like outsiders, but Richland County is like a Northeastern county plopped down in central SC.

Thanks for the advice waccamatt and CarolinaSouth803. I never thought Richland County would have that many Northeasterners. Can't wait to meet some of them.

Someone from another post in the spring wrote that "people in West Columbia do not like the YANKEES and do not come here."

I don't know that you would find that in West Columbia, though I rarely have a reason to go into Lexington County. Richland and Lexington Counties are totally different places, though. Richland County is close to the size of Rhode Island for a point of reference.

LOL....that's funny Jerseyian....just like waccamatt said....Richland and Lexington Counties are like night and day. The governments rarely agree on anything Lexington county is more rural. The only time i'm in Lexington County is when i go to Harbison blvd or up to Lake Murray....and considering my mother and most of my family lives in the Dentsville and Northeast area....when i'm in town i rarely go to that side of town for anything [especially since the Comedy house closed]

PS- The Flight Deck in the town of Lexington has some good food though.
