There are tons of new apartments under construction downtown or on the verge of starting construction.

What's the status on the two buildings that used to be the Keenan building at Lady and Sumter? On July 4th they looked unchanged since I left Columbia last July 4th. Nothing ever seems to be going on there anymore.

I meant with the former Keenan building, not in Columbia in general.

Main street's tentacles spread!!:
"Three historic buildings at the intersection of Sumter and Taylor streets downtown will receive a $7.5 million facelift because of an expanded Main Street historic district that allows the developers to leverage tax credits and other incentives.

The three buildings are the Powell Furniture building at 1519 Sumter St. and the twin Western Auto and Rose Talbert buildings at 1222 and 1224 Taylor St."

This is great news. Sumter St is a prime spot for the "spread of Main St's tentacles," like you said. I've long thought Main St's renaissance had reached critical mass, and this is further proof. Obviously, work remains to be done but we're getting there. So happy to be here to watch it happen!

If it goes through, Columbia would certainly solidify its position as the state's largest city easily.
