Does anyone know whats going on at the lot bordered by Elmwood, Calhoun, Main and Sumter? They are tearing down the old buildings there... I think one of them was a Jaguar dealership a lifetime ago.
“Typically, the succession of retail is food and then entertainment and then – I call it shopping bag retail,” Kennell said. “(Those) retailers want to make money from the day they open. They’re not really pioneers. I think as we get to this critical mass downtown, it makes retailers count heads and makes it much more likely that you would see something like a Target or an Apple store.”
I find it rather interesting the he specifically mentions Apple and Target.... two retailers that have been among speculation in previous posts for the new student housing project in the Vista.

Hopefully something good, but good riddance to that eyesore.
So this brings up the great topic about Columbia not having the hotel capacity to host but events like the NCAA March madness which USC decided not to bid for.

Haven't seen anything proposed for the lot yet but it was kind of an eyesore and time for it to be torn down. Maybe the owners want to sell it and make it look more attractive for buyers with a clean slate.

If USC were to win the bid we would likely see a humongous hotel boom happen in and around downtown filling the ugly vacant lots.
One hopes hotel developers take notice and act accordingly. This isn't a chicken-or-egg situation but more of a build-it-and-they-will-come one.
From the convention center to the NCAA, it's clear Columbia needs more full-service hotels. I wish I were a hotelier because Columbia seems like a good investment.

I just wish Columbia didn't have so many height restrictions and design guidelines to follow throughout downtown. I feel Columbia would've been better prepared to host events if there weren't so many restrictions on development.

I don't think that's the problem. Downtown is not subject to the same level of restrictions as is the Vista and we haven't seen a hotel build there. The problem is that Columbia is a secondary market without much corporate travel. There's a reason that cities like Charlotte can draw lots of full service hotels- corporate blocks, in their case the banks.
