Perhaps they will discover it will cast a shadow... on something. In all seriousness, I've wondered for the last few years when they'll develop this. I know South Columbia is anything but beautiful, but this building/warehouse looks like it'd be a nice set for a scene in a post apocalyptic movie.

Wouldn't this qualify as development and change? Anything is better than the status quo of that building.

Student apartments will be a vast improvement over that warehouse. The lot is actually right outside of city limits (literally, the Gates right next door are in the city of Columbia). I wonder if Columbia can quickly annex this to capture the tax revenue? The big problem with that whole area, of course, is that the traffic on Assembly will continue to get worse until the train issue is resolved someday.

It's currently on the agenda for the next meeting for being annexed.

Nice! The city limits are amorphous from what I can tell, so the more normal the pattern, the better. I'm glad the city is executing its annexation strategy in that area.

My concern is that we are continuing to add more student housing.. that said, I guess that is better than nothing in this area....though having industrial space/warehouses in not necessarily bad (if you want a diverse economy) since the are historically has been an industrial district. The City has been annexing down Shop Road in South Columbia and up Fairfield along I-20 to take in light industrial property likely to balance the tax base out from what they are losing of this land use in other parts of town like the Vista.

These guys wont be happy though..

A cool story to read also this is cool I've noticed it myself that downtown is constantly busy even on weekdays.

What’s causing downtown Columbia to become an ‘18-hour district’?

What

Columbia could reconsider moving Assembly Street train tracks | The State

Downtown railroad fix being updated. This is gonna be one long long project unless funding comes from the state.
